Why do people hate off-white/Virgil Abloh so much?

I wanted to do an entire thinkpiece of Virgil Abloh and what he's done so far. I'm just wondering why so many people on the internet dislike him? Well, maybe not a majority, but he's hated on here, Superfuture, and probably reddit as well.

I don't think he's an awful designer, but at the same time I'm only now trying to learn about high-fashion and the culture surrounding it, so I haven't been exposed to this kind of stuff as long as other people around here have.

Can I get some discussion going?

Virgil is a creative, yes he has inspiration but so does every menswear designer since menswear has limits to it. He is and was one of the originators of using the Sports(Football Jersey) Numbers on fashion pieces. Pyrex was a poor quality but it was printed on champion pieces so since he bought them at retail their was premiums on the prices.

Off-white has moved on quite bit for AW15 and the quality is really good. Iv got like 4 pieces and they are all really well made. People say theirs nothing innovative but name another brand that does what Virgil does and is stocked in the stores its stocked in.

And to answer OP, I think people dislike him because they see him as a scammer for charging so much for Pyrex stuff when it was printed on champion. But honestly, I think it's a lame criticism. No one forces you to buy the stuff. I liked the Pyrex designs a lot, but I didn't choose to buy any. Simple as that for me. I agreed with most people and thought I'd rather spend money on other stuff. It doesn't mean that Virgil is some kind of asshole - I just chose other products. Now I have an off-white tee and hoodie, and I like the quality. I save up for it and that's that.

People say he's only successful because he's friends with Ye, but Ye was also friends with Taz Arnold and no one wears "TI$A" ever. Pharrell wears BBC and most people don't wear that either. Drake has TOPSZN and no one I know wears that. So I don't think being friends with a rapper is like some kind of magic trick that instantly makes you successful.

People said it was "uncreative" and that's a more subjective argument, but I personally like the designs. To say that because he printed on champion makes him less talented artistically seems dumb to me. People say like "oh anyone can do that", and it kinda goes back to the modern art idea of like Jackson Pollack - yes, you could've done it -- but you didn't.

I'm an Econ major and rule #1 is that nothing is "worth" anything automatically - it's what people decide is worth it for themselves. So if people don't think his clothes are worth the money, that's 100% up to them.

I can go into further detail OP, PM me :)

I didnt say Off White is as creative as raf simons or rick owens. Im saying that how can you call Off White Uncreative and call Raf simons creative when they are basically doing the same thing, repetition.thats biasness right? For off white its stripes. For raf its the collage of images. Just like what you said, raf previous collection is terrible. You cant judge a person from just one collection right?  We all know Raf Simons has numerous accomplishments. Give Virgil some time, who knows he might be able to pull off something extraordinary in the future. Besides, its experience that hones your skills as well. Only time will tell

Anyway, all this fashion shit is SUBJECTIVE. To each his own, not everyone can appreciate what every designer is doing. Like how 90% of KTT dislike Rick Owens lol

It stems from how he introduced himself with his first brand/project: Pyrex.

It seemed very scummy to take cheap Champion tees, screenprint a famous painter's art on it, and put PYREX (a trademarked brand name) and the # 23 on the back like a jersey - then use his famous friend, Kanye, to wear it, and sell the tees at $125, hoodies for $275, & more. Not to mention, he also bought a ton of Ralph Lauren Rugby flannels on sale before RL closed down the line, at about $35 each, ripped off the original tags, screenprinted PYREX 23 on the back, and retailed them at his store for $500. Overall, it was viewed as really stupid, gimmicky and not very respectable.

He didn't gain a whole lot of respect back with Off White's first couple of collections either. It was basically the same dumb concept applied to his own cut & sewn pieces except with OFF-WHITE written on the back instead of PYREX. He also added a bunch of diagonal lines which looked very amateurish, unoriginal and lame.

His most recent collection seems to be getting praise, but mainly from people with a very narrow, limited knowledge on designer brands; from people who probably don't know about much beyond Saint Laurent, Balmain and Givenchy.

I'm sure Virgil is not a bad guy. I've heard nice things about him. Someone in this thread even shared a nice story. It's just his integrity in regards to fashion & design that people question.
