Why do people hate off-white/Virgil Abloh so much?

I wanted to do an entire thinkpiece of Virgil Abloh and what he's done so far. I'm just wondering why so many people on the internet dislike him? Well, maybe not a majority, but he's hated on here, Superfuture, and probably reddit as well.

I don't think he's an awful designer, but at the same time I'm only now trying to learn about high-fashion and the culture surrounding it, so I haven't been exposed to this kind of stuff as long as other people around here have.

Can I get some discussion going?

Right....because rick owens' creativity is strictly based on his drop crotches and long tees.  Rick Owens created and popularized an entirely new aesthetic during a time where every other high fashion brand was going for the same commercial look.

I bet you never entered a rick owens store or owned any of his pieces to feel his unconventional fabrics along with his unique stitching patterns and cut of the fabric. I don't necessarily dislike Off white either but to even mention them into the same sentence is straight up going full retard.
Dont get me wrong, im not dissing rick owens, i love his aesthetic. I admit i shouldnt have mentioned Rick, thats my fault. I would certainly like to visit a Rick store but i do not have the privilege as im staying in Asia, and i cant afford the products right now. My main point was that i feel sssssl is being bias against Virgil.

Anyway, i feel that sometimes its up to the person to be creative, and not the designer.

Because he charges so much for screen printed garments.

His Pyrex line had $125 tee shirts via V-Files or RSVP.

What people don't understand is that when you buy screenprinted clothing from Pyrex/OffWhite, HBA, and Been Trill esque-brands, you're paying for the brand name and the hype surrounding it, not the quality of the garment.

However, from when I used to care about fashion, I do recall Virgil and Shayne Oliver creating high quality pieces, but im not sure if they're available to the public or just for fashion shows.
this so true. He just creating things off a brands name and that some hype beast fucboi thing if you buy it up. Plus he keeps putting the stripes on everything. Looks like the box on city streets

loooooooool i love how mad people get over Fear of God/ Off white because of pricing. Fair play to Virgil/Jerry for actually accomplishing something and having a growing amount of credibility.

People are mad about the price because it's a new brand but new brands don't have to suck your dick (be cheap) for you to buy their products.

Some people hate graphic clothing. Some people love it.

Just like some people dont care for a wardrobe of flowy black garments from Rick.. and some people love it..

Whether you prioritize graphic art or different materials or different cuts in your closet depends on your the person. some brands have combinations of interesting materials/graphics/silhouettes while some brands lie in the extremes..

Its stupid to look at fashion objectively... because you cant. I feel like people view museum art (for lack of a better term) subjectively and I wish this attitude would be shared in the realm of fashion

Tell me the story

And to answer OP, I think people dislike him because they see him as a scammer for charging so much for Pyrex stuff when it was printed on champion. But honestly, I think it's a lame criticism. No one forces you to buy the stuff. I liked the Pyrex designs a lot, but I didn't choose to buy any. Simple as that for me. I agreed with most people and thought I'd rather spend money on other stuff. It doesn't mean that Virgil is some kind of asshole - I just chose other products. Now I have an off-white tee and hoodie, and I like the quality. I save up for it and that's that.

People say he's only successful because he's friends with Ye, but Ye was also friends with Taz Arnold and no one wears "TI$A" ever. Pharrell wears BBC and most people don't wear that either. Drake has TOPSZN and no one I know wears that. So I don't think being friends with a rapper is like some kind of magic trick that instantly makes you successful.

People said it was "uncreative" and that's a more subjective argument, but I personally like the designs. To say that because he printed on champion makes him less talented artistically seems dumb to me. People say like "oh anyone can do that", and it kinda goes back to the modern art idea of like Jackson Pollack - yes, you could've done it -- but you didn't.

I'm an Econ major and rule #1 is that nothing is "worth" anything automatically - it's what people decide is worth it for themselves. So if people don't think his clothes are worth the money, that's 100% up to them.

I can go into further detail OP, PM me :)

I was chillin with 2 friends next to a super private club in Paris, Virgil was about to go in but he came to us as he saw one of us had an Off-White backpack. We talked to him a bit and he showed us his women collection on his phone (it was way before the official presentation). Then his friends told him to get in the club and as he was leaving us he turned and said "What are you waiting for ? Come with me"

Since that night he regularly put us on private lists when he come to Paris

from what I see and hear despite him being pretentious and all "artistic", Virgil is actually a pretty cool guy tbh.

Actually TI$A was huge along with bbc during the swagfag phase like 5-6 years ago. TI$A just fell off once people were over the trend. The thing with Vrigil & Pyrex was that once Ye wore the Pyrex 23 flannel, people went crazy to get it...which then brought the hype crowd over to the brand. Like you said before, the people decide what it's worth and they copped the gear regardless of price
