Why do people hate off-white/Virgil Abloh so much?

I wanted to do an entire thinkpiece of Virgil Abloh and what he's done so far. I'm just wondering why so many people on the internet dislike him? Well, maybe not a majority, but he's hated on here, Superfuture, and probably reddit as well.

I don't think he's an awful designer, but at the same time I'm only now trying to learn about high-fashion and the culture surrounding it, so I haven't been exposed to this kind of stuff as long as other people around here have.

Can I get some discussion going?

Because he charges so much for screen printed garments.

His Pyrex line had $125 tee shirts via V-Files or RSVP.

What people don't understand is that when you buy screenprinted clothing from Pyrex/OffWhite, HBA, and Been Trill esque-brands, you're paying for the brand name and the hype surrounding it, not the quality of the garment.

However, from when I used to care about fashion, I do recall Virgil and Shayne Oliver creating high quality pieces, but im not sure if they're available to the public or just for fashion shows.

I actually disagree about when you say you're not paying for the quality. From what I can tell/heard, Off-White and HBA, correct me if I'm wrong, are actually very high in quality.

I just appreciate the fact that Virgil and Shane are taking street aesthetics and directly throwing them into high fashion.

I havent had any experienc with OffWhite garments, but Pyrex was printed on Champion tee shirts.

I had a friend who has a HBA longsleeve and the quality is just like any other longsleeve.

Ive also seen someone at my school with HBA Pants, it had these little cushion things on them, it looked so cheap...

Maybe you've seen newer pieces, but from what ive seen, its not great quality..

Owning two new (ish) Off-White garmets (Hoodie and T-Shirt), they're probably the nicest pieces I own quality wise.

I don't really have much to say about HBA but I really think Virgil does a great job.

Hell, I mean the dude went out of his way for me and got me a brand new hoodie because the print on the back of my t-shirt was cracked when I bought it and I didn't realize.

I have nothing but great things to say about Virgil and Harper and all the people at Off White.

i was hooked up with around $1k worth of pyrex when it first dropped and I actually liked the designs but I didn't like the idea of screen printing on a $5 hoodie and selling it for $350. so I sold all my shit that I got.

i think he truly has good designs and knows what he's doing and has a vision.
but he kind of fucked up his rep with pyrex and been trill/hba.

I would never pay retail for anything designed by him.

HBA/BeenTrill arent Virgils brand

Cause what he did with Pyrex & been trill was a joke. Though a couple pieces from those collections were decent he charged $100-200+ for stuff that took $10 to produce and fronts like a creative designer & shit when those collections took little to no creativity on his part.

Off white isn't as bad even though it copied road signs & he still acts like a creative genius? Overpriced aswell but decent quality at least (so people say)

I think what he's doing and done with Off White so far is really good, I believe his whole attitude towards the creative industry is on point, atleast from what I've gathered from interviews. He cares about a quality product and pushing creative ideas through different mediums. Which I respect.

You would never ask this question if you had some taste in clothes tbh. Let young hypebeasts buy that shit with their father's money.

Offwhite creative???? WTF?! Put a Offwhite + Number + some stripes on jeans, t shirts, hoodies, jackets, winbreakers.... And overprize it asf. Thats so creative omg. Rip fashion

how bout rick owens? Raf simons?  selling drop crotch everything with long tees? Putting putting random images on a piece of garment and selling it for high prices? Doesnt sound very creative at all as well, no offence to these brands, i actually like them alot. Whats your definition of creative? I would like some input. Not forgetting fashion is about trends, so dont be surprised about brands like off white being popular and stuff. Also we shouldnt judge a garment on its own, we should see how a person pulls it off in an entire fit, thats what matters. Someone wearing offwhite head to toe might look ridiculous, but if he incorporates just a piece or two of Off White into his fit along with his own style, and can Look good in it, i dont see anything wrong with what Off White is doing.

Holy fcking sh*t did you just say Offwhite is as creative as Owens/Raf?

How dare you compare these 2 - arguably one of the most creative and influential streetwear designers of 21st century? (please note that I said streetwear and 21st century I don't consider them the best designers ever, nothing like that) They've released large number of streetwear grails over the last 15 years. I could go on with all their accomplishments'n'shit in fashion but I won't waste time with someone who compares Raf to Virgil (Raf's last collection is thrash we can agree on that, but he's been in fashion for what? 20 years?). All Virgil does is he uses the same design over and over and over again or he just puts the stripes on a different place. That's why he's never gonna be respected by rational in fashion.

Yes you can propably find someone who manages to pull off a nice outfit in something Virgil has designed, but mostly it just looks stupid.

I didnt say Off White is as creative as raf simons or rick owens. Im saying that how can you call Off White Uncreative and call Raf simons creative when they are basically doing the same thing, repetition.thats biasness right? For off white its stripes. For raf its the collage of images. Just like what you said, raf previous collection is terrible. You cant judge a person from just one collection right?  We all know Raf Simons has numerous accomplishments. Give Virgil some time, who knows he might be able to pull off something extraordinary in the future. Besides, its experience that hones your skills as well. Only time will tell

Anyway, all this fashion shit is SUBJECTIVE. To each his own, not everyone can appreciate what every designer is doing. Like how 90% of KTT dislike Rick Owens lol

Right....because rick owens' creativity is strictly based on his drop crotches and long tees.  Rick Owens created and popularized an entirely new aesthetic during a time where every other high fashion brand was going for the same commercial look.

I bet you never entered a rick owens store or owned any of his pieces to feel his unconventional fabrics along with his unique stitching patterns and cut of the fabric. I don't necessarily dislike Off white either but to even mention them into the same sentence is straight up going full retard.Â
