Why Are Christopher Nolan's Films So Overrated?

The Following is excellent. Memento is a masterpiece. Insomnia is solid. Batman Begins, the Prestige and The Dark Knight are good. Inception is gutter trash, and The Dark Knight Rises is :sadblu:. Why do people act like he's one of the greatest directors ever when he isn't even one of the best from this decade?

That being said, I really like Nolan. There is just far better directors out there in my opinion.
Thing is.... I'm willing to put Nolan in the category of "one of" the best directors active currently. Because personally as a director I think he is excellent.  We all recognize his weakness in the writing department, but I really don't think that should hinder him as a director..

Now, if we're comparing directors who also write...then no, absolutely not. He's not one of the best.

I agree. I just value those who write and direct their stuff at an equally high level more. I do love how Nolan has almost carried the torch from James Cameron when it comes to blockbusters and make them even better. That seems to be his niche which is fine.

I think that's just the way you have to accept Nolan.... and since Cameron has gone off the freaking deep end, thank God Nolan is around lmfao.

I didn't like True Grit as much as I thought I would but since they gave me No Country recently, they get a pass.
Ahh man I really enjoyed True Grit. Definitely not there best work but I found it to be a good effort.  The pacing is a bit tough to get invested in but I could watch those performances all day lol.

The pacing is what bugged me. I'll have to watch it again sometime as I haven't watched it since the theaters. Maybe it needs multiple viewings to get into.

True Grit was way too boring. I definitely blame the incredibly slow pacing of it. And then the last 20 minutes all of a sudden go by so fast. It definitely killed my mood and I honestly didnt give a fuck what happened 30-40 minutes into the movie.

This isn't THAT hard to understand.

He makes blockbuster movies that aren't awful. Compare his film's to Michael Bay - and it's just night and day. You can look at a director like PTA, Wes Anderson etc. And while their movies are fantastic, and infinitely better than the majority of filmmakers out there right now, the majority of people that watch movies will I. Not see those movies in the first place. II. If they see them, not really care for their non-conventional style.

This is like asking why formulaic and predictable things are popular and sell the most. Because people don't like change, they want comfort, accessibility, and for things to go down smoothly.

Nolan makes those kind of films, but brings more quality to them then they are usually afforded (Mostly in his plots - which most blockbusters lack). The problem is, fans of Nolan then want badly for Nolan to be seen as a visionary artist, that makes high art. And the reality is, often his films are still shlock. They are higher quality shlock. But still shlock.
Da trufe.

Because of the name he's made for himself, particularly with the Batman trilogy, it's doubtful he'll abandon directing films that appeal to the masses instead of attempting to top Memento.
