Why Are Christopher Nolan's Films So Overrated?

The Following is excellent. Memento is a masterpiece. Insomnia is solid. Batman Begins, the Prestige and The Dark Knight are good. Inception is gutter trash, and The Dark Knight Rises is :sadblu:. Why do people act like he's one of the greatest directors ever when he isn't even one of the best from this decade?

You know obviously everyone knows I'm a big fan of Nolan's work... and usually all you need is the name of the director to get excited about something...as a Nolan film..

But what's interesting with Intersteller is... I'm more interested in it because of what this script seems to have been through all ready lol... With Spielberg letting it go and already being written to Jonathan...and now Nolan rewriting it to incorporate more of his own ideas.. It's just the backstory of the script that is really intriguing me.

Outside of Memento, TDKR, and Following, Nolan's films are extremely entertaining--flawed, yes, but still entertaining. So now that he's sort of been given a script that was passed by Spielberg, who produces his best work when working in this type of genre (imo), I'm interested to see what Nolan comes up with. I don't think he's a strong writer, but now that that aspect of the process seems to already be taken care of by someone else, I'm interested in seeing Nolan providing some beautiful images, that'll most likely be projected on an IMAX screen :datass:

TDK, BB, Memento, and Inception are all well done films in every way. Id say with those films listed, Nolan is clearly a great writer. TDKR might not be a strongly written film, but the majority of his films are atleast good in that category and then strong for movies listed above.

Ehhh writing is not Nolan's strong suit. He can get a little in love with exposition and explaining rather than showing.

He is very good handling things with huge scopes directing wise.

brief sidenote...at first I saw you mention Momento and I was like WHAT?? But I remember a while back reading and talking that you weren't big on that film. 

But yeah even being a Nolan fan, I do to believe that writing is his biggest weakness.  And I think fortunately for him this project can shine a little more light on his directorial skills, rather then people watching his films which look stunning but only coming out of it talking about his weak narrative.. So really this is like a showcase piece of work for him.  Because the reality of it is that he's not actually rewriting the script, he's just working in other facets of an already conjured up idea. 

So yeah, it should be very interesting.

maybe with inception he does explain a bit too much, but at the same time the film was handled very well to make all the logic work and have the ideas come out at the end.

TDK imo is the best display of writing I have seen from him. It is exceptional. Memento as well.

It's just Nolan is far behind in comparison to other guys who write and direct their own stuff.

Even with that said and me being a huge fan of his.... he has a long way to go in the writing department.. I mean, the first thing you learn in any film class is "show, not tell," and Nolan rips that page right out of the textbook. Personally I think his writing is fine in Memento, TDK and somewhat in Inception (although it could have been much better at the same time), and even with my love for TDRK, he still didn't write the film all that well and it could have been done much better in the hands of someone else. 

But again, you can't take away from his direction skills because he's on the weaker side of writing.  He truly does know what he's doing....and at this point I would be fine if someone else wrote his work from now on.

yeh maybe behind QT and PTA (tho I will say TDK is comparable to some of their works script wise)

Nolan is still a brilliant director and a pretty good writer (I dont really know why he dropped the ball with TDKR in terms of the script, but atleast he made it up with great direction imo)

well keep in mind hes usually co writing with his brother.

You see I agree with you here

But he makes movies for the general public

and the general public is stupid

So they have to be babied through a film's themes

So in other words Nolan movies are gateway drugs films

Nolan was definitely not explaining when he wrote Memento then

Inception and TDKR are honestly the only films Ive seen from Nolan that match that bolded description.
