In an airport in Charlotte when he rang Aubrey nervously and they had a brief conversation which was followed by a song by the name of crew love which was played over the Toronto radio waves for the first time.

I

damn the feels

After the tapes, there was buzz about him. I don't think he really blew up til Earned It. And pretty recently people are still calling The Weeknd a band...

This is the real answer, he put out the tapes but was still relatively unknown to the majority of people. Now he's a star and most people know the weeknd. I was into him before the trilogy and if I mentioned the weeknd to anyone theyd have no clue wtf I was talking about. Now he's just another name that people know from the radio. That's really my definition of blowing up. He might have gained popularity from the tapes but he definitely didn't "blow up"

like I said, there are levels to it. Drake was buzzing with So Far Gone on a high level, that was before all that YM shit & he was just a known underground rapper (besides all the TV shit) with connections and good music, he didn't really BLOW UP like that till Forever came out & he was more solidified as someone here to stay. Then TML came out and he was able to prove that he's a force to be reconned with sales wise too & at that point nobody could stop talking about him, from barber shops, to radio shows, pop media etc. Then you have TC which propelled him even further but at that time he already blew up but he blew up to a more pop radio friendly level of mainstream popularity, especially after that shit with Rihanna.

IMO it's not really the same come up due to The Weeknd not really putting himself out there for interviews which kinda slowed down his trajectory into being talked about everywhere, cause regardless of how you feel about the whole "mystery" he started with, that was only cool for a year. He wasn't out here being seen as much as Drake was by the world. Why do you think so many people are just now hearing about him? A lot of peoole have never even seen him till Love Me Harder video came out, regardless if they've heard the song on the radio & loved it.

It's early & I just woke up so excuse me if im rambling, at the end of the day (well, beginning of the day for me) all I'm saying is after Love Me Harder then Earned It came out, he's been in a whole bother level. Before he wasn't getting 100 million+ views when he drops a video on YouTube, now it's almost expected.
You described it the right way

word this is why i said he blew up after the Ariana Grande collab but these shitty stans are so in denial

HOB was when he was slept on then when Take Care got him popping and Drunk In Love kinda got him in the mix with the youth then Earned It was for the older demographic and ICFMF was for everyone

It's funny me and my cousin were both having this conversation a few days ago lol and we both agreed it was when Drake posted about him on his blog
