I think it's because he felt like the media always tried to demonize him or whatever.

He went to support Occupy Wall Street but didn't say anything because he knew that anything he said would get twisted and used against him, and there were still a ton of articles that came out about what an asshole he was for being there and not saying anything. That wasn't the start of his black out but kind of proved why he was smart to go on one. He can't win with the media/general public.
