Dust formed a community between the ivory keys. Ten years later, “Please,” the old woman’s will wrote, “play the song of heartbreak on my grand piano when I pass.” The piano showed up to the old woman’s funeral like an old friend. Her daughter played a song on the piano that reminded her of trips to the park to feed the ducks. Every extra stroke and step on the pedal added a memory. From amusement parks to the day she left for college. From college to the marriage and children. Children to a drive to a new suburban home in another city. Every note played frantically skipped through the old woman’s timeline that led to the final stroke. Along the way, the sunbeams reflected the surface of the cream and pushing down, dust flew from the crevices as if the old friend knew how to dance in the rain. Tears flooded the keys escaping the ducts of the daughter, wondering why birds left during the winter at central park.
