The Real problem with Weeknd: Zero mic presence, creativity, artistry

Basically everything that should define a popular/good artist. I'm specifically talking about the last year or so or however much it's been post trilogy.

This is somewhat hard to explain but it's as if he's turned off his creative motor in every single way (lyrically, vocally) to mold his song into the pre decided drugged out ego trip bullshit he's been on for the past two years. This is blatantly evident in all of his recent failed and boring af singles. All his singles sound like Weeknd hopping on a beat that fits his 'image' and his spewing a mix of drag queen/whispering/sex&drugs&money and him riding the beat until the chorus hoping for the best. This is not music, this is hearing Abel Tesfaye drag queen across a song and then the chrous comes on, the songs aren't defining or uniquely amazing anymore. Partly because it's been done before, but mostly because he's changed.

Think of it this way, replace all of his singing from his other gbage tracks (enemy, 28, till dawn, kissland etc.) and mix them all up across songs and you won't notice a fuqing difference. Where is the soothing falsetto of "Thinkin bout you"? The non chalant and spaced out Frank in "Novacane/Pyramids pt2", The clean but aggressive vocal candor of "Adorn"? The upbeat and overly confident miguel in "Do you"? You get the point. It's part of the reason why Weeknd generally sucks live. Live is much more about the vocals and mic presence of the song, of which weeknd has none.

You're probably thinking "Then why was HoB so good?"

HoB was incredible. Songs like What you need were complemented perfectly by an aggressive and screeching performance by Abel on a lo-fi overlay. Brilliant. The fast paced but relaxed delivery on Loft Music and The Party, and of course the drugged out delivery on The Morning etc. 3 years later and he's still trying to create The Morning pt. 2 lol. I honestly believe the reason why HoB is so much better than his other work is because it was fresh. It blew minds cause no one heard anything like it before, and to Abel's credit, his vocals often matched the song. But for the past 3 years his creativity has stalled completely while bringing in different beats trying to create the exact same structure/vibe of HoB with the only differentiating factor being the production, he is no longer a true artist, and to be honest i dont think he ever was. Judging by how much he sucks now i'm starting to think he either got lucky or was carried by people he ended up fucking over in HoB (maybe why he's uncreative rhetoric now)

Oh and to you stans who think his new lyrics about coming fro poverty to seeing the whole new world is a defining/changing/hopeful moment as to what to expect on Kissland

I got a brand new place, I think I've seen it twice all year
I can't remember how it looks inside, so you can picture how my life's been
I went from starin' at the same four walls for 21 years
To seein' the whole world in just twelve months

Well probably not, if I keep my habits up
Probably not if I can't keep up with lovin'
I can't stand talkin' to brand new girls
Only bitches down to fuck when you shower them with ones
Probably not if I tweak all day just to sleep at night
God damn I'm high

So he's bragging about how successful he is now and how fast it came for him and then a couple lines later hes talking about how he cant sleep at night and fucking strippers :hah: omg you stans are seriously delusional. Enjoy your drag queen garbage

This is all interesting and there are a lot of good theories here but it's all invalid because your saying kiss land is trash :kanyeshrug:
tbh i dont think Kissland as a whole is trash. Weeknd's delivery has becoem so recycled and fucking boring that i despise it, but for example the chorus and the beat and the first song is fucking insane that i almost wish it went to Frank Ocean or The Dream.

You know damn well that the instrumental wouldn't fit either The Dream or Frank Ocean. I'll give you that perhaps his lyrics are getting a bit redundant, however I don't think this will be the route that Kiss Land( the album) takes lyrically. And lets not act like Miguel and The Dream are lyrically diverse.

And the delivery and melodies he uses in Kiss Land are ones that he hasn't ever used or hasn't used since The Fall and Loft Music, both excellent songs.

Eh, Good points...I can almost agree with you on the lack of subject matter as I've thought about that myself recently. However to say hes "trash" or untalented is crazy imho.

He carved a niche for himself and he does it VERY well. I think the verdict on Kissland will be the final thought addressing your arguments (proving or disproving). The atmosphere of Kissland(the song) is spot on and abels vocals are the only fitting for quite a song.

Also, to say he sucks live, eh. For someone whos not a fan I could see why you'd say that but after watching his coachella performance (many times) I don't think hes that bad. I plan to see Abel live and don't think I'll be disapointed by the few mis-key vocals. Its about the energy, the mood, the whole atmosphere present in a show. Not american idol.

Just my 2cent.

I'd fail him, mostly because he's a stupid bastard...

The-Dream (who has a super dope album out by the way)
The Dream? LMAO! And I'm corny? Wow. The Dream is the archetype of corny ass R&B. Even his SHUT IT DOWN with Drake was terrible. You truly will say anything to go against The Weeknd. It's like you were in love and you had your heart broken. I'm tempted to feel sorry for you.

Dream = Super Dope? Wow. Feel free to wild the fuck out now :)

The only thing I agree with OP is that Abel's songwriting ability is disastrous

And as for Thoth, I don't understand you, it's like you're trying so hard for people to forget the fact that your dick used to be
mad deep into Abel's ass by hating on him for no reason, it ain't working fam...
