lol, funny cause I was just having a conversation about my buddies the other day about whether or not you can "outgrow Hip-Hop". I think we ended with "it remains to be seen."

On a related note, would you guys say this was a strong year in Hip-Hop?

Not in general. The only bad thing about the Kanye album for me is that I don't really see where another album of that quality is coming from in the genre.

If I did a list of my 20 favourite albums of this year it would contain three hip hop albums, or four if you want to count Cosmogramma. That's not too bad, but the genre does not excite me all that much at the moment. I won't deny that I have very specific tastes though and can't just gobble up everything hip hop-related. I'm especially hyped for Big K.R.I.T.'s debut right now, hopefully next year.

I'd say it was better than last year slightly, but not strong necessarily. In Hip-Hop it seems we're all waiting for the 1994 or the 2000 type of year, several classics coming from all sorts of places. And following the patterns of those years, the bulk of the quality will have to come from the up and comers. I wonder if it will ever happen.

Outgrown? I don't know if I can. How can I possibly outgrow you guys? lol I don't even know what that means exactly!

..but I guess I have outgrown Kanye. Maybe. I dislike his stunting/bragging mixed in with the overexaggerated feeling of making epic music. I think Kanye has become a cornball and it shines through in his music. I still wouldn't mind a listen or two, but... my other music's enough for me. Like Big Boi! Love that guys stuff, but can't really listen to his whole album over and over. That music's just not me.

three more classic albums and kanye is out of my top 10 list :dno:

If you mean what I think you mean there, then I'd have to agree. But I still like the music. Its just that he's surrounded it with some of the most unnecessary and contrived collaborations just for the sake of it, while also adding things that just don't need to be there.

What happened to the days when he would go and get Nas on a track like "We Major", or Jay-Z to rap on "Never Let You Down"? Instead now we get Rick Ross to come in on a song that is otherwise brilliant. I don't care how well he fared or whatever, he just doesn't fit the built up moment at all and I don't care what he has to say. Nor do I care what social commentary Fergie is trying to make in "All Of The Lights" lol, but its there and now I can't play that song all the way through.

Regardless, its still a very good album to me but I can see where you're coming from Dutch.

Yeah, that was all I meant. You've developed a taste in hip hop which doesn't allow for you to enjoy the music Kanye makes these days, so you've outgrown a lot of us (including me) because you don't have a tolerance for his style. It wasn't an insult (you know I'm not going to insult you), it was just an observation I was making as I noticed that you have expressed very refined tastes as of late, especially in hip hop production. It's admirable really, I just could never get to that level.

Like, if you can't play All Of The Lights all of the way through as Abid says he cannot, you're on a level above most people at this site, including me. It's the same reason I like Tha Carter III while some guys here would have all Wayne fans crucified without considering the individual and their wider taste in music, in which case I'd be firmly in that grave, sadly.

Nooooo. No crucifying. Pitch Lil Wayne's voice up a bit and he becomes a pretty funny rapper (FlyLo's Robo Tussin). Put him on a couple of jazz beats Quasimoto-style and I'd love the shit out of him! Well, I think; can't be sure 'till I've heard it, but, sounds fun. There's a time and place for a lot of music that I wouldn't put on my lists, so I definitely wouldn't wanna cancel out all those moments and situations. For instance, when I'm out with my big brother, I thorougly enjoy Kid Cudi like he does. Kid Cudi however is NOT good and I don't like him. lol

Are you implying that simply because you can't listen to All of the Lights all the way through that someone has a superior music taste to other individuals?

If you know Porce, that is definitely not what he implies. Now if I'd say it on the other hand... lol nah kidding

Well I constantly see people being abused by big music fans for liking pop music, so I guess so. :( It upsets me but it seems to be the way.

What I was directly saying though was that you have a very strong, resistant approach to music if you switch a track like that off halfway through because an artist you dislike is featured. It's not something I could contemplate doing. For example, I love Shine Blockas despite the appeal of Gucci Mane baffling me.
Pff, any music fans that claim they're not into pop are contradicting themselves. Nowadays anything that has appeal is pop, and all music certainly has appeal. Underground rap is pop, for instance, if you measure it up to something like musique concrete (I love that stuff ftr! inspiring! lol). I heard someone say classical music is the only true music and all the other music is entertainment. He was sort of right, if only classical music actually weren't just as much entertainment as a lot of other music. Bleh. The pop discussion is a silly one. I can only say I often don't like a lot of pop because of personal experiences (I'm listening to the contemporary R&B marvel Little Dragon right now, it's pretty pop).

I'd definitely agree with this post. The difficulty is perception. I hate most popular music but I love pop music. For example, the Big Boi album is totally pop IMO, and I love it.

Obviously the Kanye record is pop but it's a rare example of popular music being good too. You could have said that about Outkast too, but Big Boi on his own doesn't seem to be very well known.

Still the album of the year.
For sure, IMO. Didn't know you shared that viewpoint (I haven't properly looked through this thread yet), but that's cool! I haven't seen a lot of love on these boards for the record.

It's not just the album of the year for me; I started including it in 'best 25 albums released since you were born' threads and stuff. :)
