Is TPAB the most critic bait thing we've ever had in rap?

I mean regardless of how good or bad it was (I didn't like it at all) but the content of it and what he's talking about is pure critic bait I mean he simply can't lose at the Grammys

Fitting into the critic bait description isn't even necessarily bad tho (as long as pleasing critics isn't legitimately ur main concern) like Kanye's recent albums can probably be considered critic bait tbh and I believe he's making the music he wants to. its just moreso an explanation for the reaction (or overreaction) to the music in that category by critics and critic-types.

People saying critic bait is some made up shit, acting like Oscar bait isn't prevalent in the film industry. It's the same thing.
Critics =/= the oscars :hah:

Critics are more idiosyncratic, harder to predict, and therefore harder to "bait". The way to make something critically acclaimed is to make a good movie, not a specific type of good movie. This makes it possible for Raiders of the Lost Ark and 2001 to have the same score on RT

Anyway when you're "baiting critics" you typically write a bunch of pseudo intellectual artsy unintelligible trash. TPAB was REALLY straightforward and REALLY personal, so I don't really see what you're getting at OP. I think he just told his story over beats he liked.

eh critic/oscar bait isn't just the "message" or intellectualism of it tho. a lot of the time it's just consciously trying to be artsy or different, like Birdman (last year's Oscar winner) for example. Most of the movie is shot thru continuous shots where the cameras follow the actors from room to room, while the movie is simultaneously a commentary on the entertainment industry and actors in general, shit that a committee of people directly involved in the entertainment industry are obviously going to connect to, and be baited by. I dunno how much replay value or repeated watches would affect that, as with TPAB. The live instrumentation, heavy influence of jazz & funk, spoken word & poem interludes, and more on top of themes of depression and politics all screams "look at me I'm artsy and different!!! in the same way that atypical camera styles and self-reflective looks into the entertainment industry does in movies like Birdman. Those are really the tactics that bait critics, and they're not reserved just for movies IMO.
interesting perspective but the thing is I don't think the director of Birdman or Kendrick were trying to be artsy, they were just making what they wanted to. If anything Kanye making Yeezus screams "look how artsy I am" using industrial sounds and low-fi mixing techniques, having an album cover with no cover, naming it Yeezus, its like not even "look how artsy I am, just look at me and what I'm doing, are you mad". I like Yeezus, but your point as to why Kendrick sucks is kind of weak if him trying to be artsy in your eyes is your only point.

So racially-charged hip hop is critic bait now?

Don't think Public Enemy has cracked an 80+ metascore or been in line for AOTY at the Grammys in a while...

Jazz rap revival isn't new either. Not seeing those albums rack up 96+. Huh.

Maybe it's just that TPAB is executed brilliantly and these are bullshit excuses?
