Many people still aren't hip to the brilliance of Lupe Fiasco storytelling ability. More specifically, The story of The Cool. So what I have Done is taken every song related to the story and put them in order to help guide you through the tale of The Cool. I have included verse's and bolded or italicized parts of the song that are important to remember. So lets begin.

Lupe Fiasco - Real Recognize Real

OK lets start with the characters in the Story of "The Cool".

First verse introduces Michael Young History

They say real recognize real
The dollar bill will exercise our ills...E
Frauds is thoroughly camouflaged and fatigued in the field
Be careful who you believe, the pills
Is dealed like flaccid, proceeds go towards the buying of Caprice Classics
With the wheels to match it, so they can mack it
Like an automatic weapon steppin' off into traffic
Like, check him, tears roll down the eyes
Of the rides inside of a funeral procession
Here lies, with X's in his eyes, the unguided misdirected
Squad cars roll past and laugh

Second verse introduces The Streets

They say the streets is a demon in a dress
Wit dollar signs in her eyes and semen on her breath (UH!)
Scantly clad, no panties, deep throating in an alley
Aging badly in sunglasses she pretty
Slain boyfriend names is tattooed on her titties
Sprinkling greed ignorance and envy inside of a Philly
Hennessey tears, ass'll bring ya enemy's here
Flirt wit her flaws till you run up in her raw

Third verse introduces The Game (best verse in the song imo)

They say the game has the belly of a beast
Blunts for fingers and hollow tips for teeth
Wire taps for ears, Nike Airs for feet
Blasphemy for prayers, a system for a heart
Rap music for beats, heroin for a son and its married to The Streets
Crack pipes for lungs, and he never sleeps
Just spies, wit dice in his eyes
Loves life cuz he likes when it dies
Wit a baking soda soul, he cough up pleasure
Clothes made out of dollar bills that he sewed together
He knows, he's clever, jealous his house
All the liquor that's poured out, goes right in his mouth
Rides around on a stray bullet;
Wit prostitutes, pimps, dope dealers and killers tied to it to pull it
A TV in his head, stripper slides down his legs
And he's known to ride around wit feds, and he's OUT THERE

Now lets look at Michael's early life

Second Verse
So he said to him
"I want you to be a father
I'm your little boy and you don't even bother
Like "brother" without the R
And I'm starting to harbor
Cool and food for thought
But for you I'm a starver
Starting to use red markers on my work
My teacher say they know I'm much smarter
But I'm hurt
I used to hand my homework in first
Like I was the classroom starter
Burst to tears
Let them know he see us Now I'm fighting in class
Got a note last week that say I might not pass
Kids ask me if my daddy is sick of us
Cause you ain't never pick me up
You see what my problem is?
That I don't know where my poppa is
No positive male role model
To play football and build railroad models
It's making a hole you've been digging it
Cause you ain't been kicking it
Since I was old enough to hold bottles
Wasn't supposed to get introduced to that
I don't deserve to get used to that
Now I ain't asking you for money or to come back to me
Some days it ain't sunny but it ain't so hard
Just breaks my heart When my momma try to provide and I tell her 'That ain't your job'
To be a man, she try to make me understand
That she my number one fan
But its like you born from the stands
You know the world is out to get me, why don't you give me a chance?"

As Michael gets older he meets a girl that would become his wife and have a daughter with.

She is called Sunshine in later songs

As Michael gets older he also gets involved with selling drugs and other bad things.

Sittin, in the back of the police car position
Your mission is forgetting and denying they existence
Thinking of different ways to keep from submitting
and continuing not to mention...like that
Grand marquee police interceptor edition
with wall so you can barely fit in
Knees is touching the front seat shifting
Cause your handcuffs is cutting your wrist and
Your wishin that he would drive faster pleeeease
But he slows the hood as he drives past the free
It's cool but you trippin' the quicker you get there
The quicker you sit there and cuffed to a bench and
They playing good cop, bad cop one of the them
pretending so you rewindyourself
To your uneasy recline in the back of the police car
hand-cuffed to the seat belt...NAW
"You ain't gotta quicken the pace"
That just give me more time to sit and erase
Alibi and aliase switch and replace
Think about then figure out an escape thank God that I'm up in the states
Cuz if I was in Russia who knows how'd they do a hustla
Waite!
I ain't a hustla I'm straight
I'm damn near a busta, no laws I break
Money I never seen guns, I didn't hold
drugs I never sold calls I didn't make
***** this is a waste of your time and mines
"Is that uncomfortable?"...."I fine"
A case? this ain't even a fine
You ain't find nothin' homie not even a dime
Not even a don that'll drop dime on me
I know you as Don so you put a dime on me
I know thats a crime you suppossed to fight crime for me
Protect and to serve
Prosecute, correct and return to the homies
And thats gonna send direct to the curb, so you can put em back on me

But he got his cake up after the streets gave him the key.

(Also all the fast food and food references, and a solja boy dis at the end)
[Intro]
I swear when I see this *****, I'ma kill em, I'm going to kill him, so make ****** suffer.
[Chorus]
My man said life aint easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy streets be all

My man said life ain't easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy streets be all
Like feed me feed me when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy
My man said life aint easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy
[Verse 2]
He was a heart breaker and a large shaker, if it was bout caking, he was a part taker
International he would take trips bon voyage just as hard he was fishing for the chips so greedy
Never gave to the needy thats what some say he shoned on the bums hanging in the subways he
Called them fruits and laughed at em delivery man on the pick up drive through and throw the bag
At em it was hard to understand him sometimes making a killing the way he had em standing in line
Like
[Chorus]
My man said life aint easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy streets be all
Like feed me feed me when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy
My man said life aint easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy
[Verse 3]
Lovers call him king haters call him clown he would say bite me thats the way its goin down he
Was having thoughts that maybe he should retire went to church on sunday and saw a deep fryer said He had beef and people want him dead he love the hungry ones only scared of the feds he lived
The fast life couldn't get his path right fried just told him bout the hooters that he had last
Night turn yourself in to the patty wagon said no bacon wouldn't take em had the pigs on the pay
Roll
[Outro]
To be continued, on another menu, ya dig.
Will he give up his life of crime or will he stay?
This and other adventured on lupe fiasco's next album, L - U - P - END
Yessir!
My man said life ain't easy when ****** gotta eat thats when shit get greasy, hey!

Now he was the Coolest *****, seduced by The Streets with promises of a star life, she gives him the key that he keeps on a chain. He Leaves his wife for Fame and Fortune.

In the ( ---) There are quotes from other songs to kinda tie things together.
The coolest ******... what? [X16]
Lord please have sympathy, and forgive My Cool young history(Michael Young History), as
The coolest ******... what? [X4]

[Verse 1]
I love the Lord,
But sometimes it's like that I love me more
I love the peace
And I love the war
I love the seas
and I love the shore
No love for no beach
baby, that's law
But she doesn't see, therefore I spoil
I trip, I fall
run up in raw. ("Flirt wit her flaws till you run up in her raw " )
I love her, with all my heart
Every vein, every vessel,
every bullet lodged
With every flower that I ever took apart
She said - that she would give me greatness,
status, placement above the others
My face would grace covers
of the magazines of the hustlers
Paper, the likes of which that I had never seen
Her eyes glow green
with the logo of our dreams ("Wit dollar signs in her eyes")
The purpose of our scene,
The obscene obsession for the bling
She would be my queen,
I could be her king
Together, she would make me cool
and we would both rule, forever,
And I would never feel pain
and never be without pleasure, ever, again
And if the rain stops,
And everything's dry
she would cry
Just so I can drink
the tears from her eyes ("Hennessey tears")
She'll teach me how to fly
Even cushion my fall
If my engines ever stall
and I plummet from the sky
But she will keep me high
And if I ever die
She would commission my image
on her bosom (Slain boyfriend names is tattooed on her titties)
To him
Or maybe she'd retire as well
A match made in Heaven set the fires in Hell
and I'll be...

The coolest ******... what? [X8]
Lord please have sympathy,
And forgive my My Cool young history(Michael Young History) as
The coolest ******... what? [X4]

[Verse 2]
And so began our reign
The Trinity, her and I came
No weather man could ever stand
What her and I can
Hella hard
Umbrella, whatever,
put plywood on propeller panes,
And pray to God that the flood subside
'cause you gonna need a sub till he does reply
And not one of Jared's
You think it's all arid
and everything's irie
Another supply
That means another July
Inside my endless summer
That was just the eye of the Unger (Unger Felix)
Felix, 'cause he is the cleanest amongst the
Younger, outstanding achieving up-and-comers
The ones that had deadbeat daddies
and well to do mommas
But not well enough to keep 'em from us
The ones that were fightin' in class
Who might not pass
Rap record pressure to laugh
and a life not fast
"Can you feel it?"[echo]
That's what I got asked
"Do I love her?"[echo]
I said I don't know
Streets got my heart, Game got my soul
One time's my sunshine will never hurt your soul
Quote
To a crying, dishonored baby momma
Who's the momma to a daughter (the girl in sunshine)
That I had fathered from afar
My new lady gave me a Mercedes (The Streets)
and a necklace with a solid gold key
Like the starter of a car
The opener of a door or two pounds of raw
You gave me a baby, but what about lately?
then ha-ha-ha-ha-ha'd
Right up in her face, G
There's more fish in the sea,
I'm on my mission to be, be

The Coolest ******... what? [X8]
Lord please have sympathy,
and forgive My Cool young history(Michael Young History)
The Coolest... what? [X4]

[Verse 3]
Come. These are the tales of The Cool.
Guaranteed to go and make you fail from your school
And seek unholy grails like a fool
and hang with the players of the pool (Shoutout to Gwendolyn Brooks)
Fast talkin' on the hustle
No Heaven up above you
No Hell underneath ye
and nowhere will recieve thee
So.
Shed no tear
when we're not here
and keep your faith,
as we chase

The Cool [echoes]

The KeyChain was the key to The Streets' heart Shaped locket, the key to her heart, the key to the streets, fame, and fortune.

Now The Game becomes jealous of Michael and plans a hit on him.

During each verse Lupe and Gemstone play different roles. In the First verse, Lupe plays some guy telling Michael about the bounty on his head. In the Second verse, Gemstone plays the role of the Game. Keep in mind that the game has wiretapes for ears so he can hear everything. When the 3rd verse plays Lupe takes the role of Michael while Gemstone plays the role of the Game. The Game is telling the Hitman about Michael's whereabouts and movements to get him ready for the set up. At the end of the song Lupe plays the role of the Hitman and Gemstone plays the role of Michael.

I present, the death, of tha cool [Verse 1]
[Lupe talking to Michael about the the bounty on his head]
Well I heard like group of cows
That all your enimies wanna shoot you down
They got ak 47's and a bunch of mac 11's

Cause they comin for your head,
And its a bounty on that chain thats hangin from your neck
They said
[Chorus]

What you been told in your ear, but I hear its goin down
Sombody gotta

[Lupe chatter]
Man, man you can't beleive none of that. Man you need just need to, you just need to relax

[Gemstones]
40 caliber stashed up in tha stash box
Bullet proof windows, you couldn't break em wit a padlock
Ak in tha trunk, where tha sounds bump
Two twin glock 40's and a nine and his damn crouch
[Lupe]
Maaaaaaan

[Lupe as the hitman] ay pull over right here, i gotta take a pee
And don't go nowhere ***** wait for me
And if some ****** do kill you in the next few minutes

[Musics slowly fades to a stop]

But theirs a problem, He comes Back to Life as "The Cool"

"He came back
In the same suit that he was buried in"

[Chorus]

The Game finds out about Michaels Return
Also this Song sheds light on the history of The Game where he describes himself as the ever present corruption in society that has eliminated opposition in the past.

Never really thought about sitting Sunshine and Handcuffs in the story like that.

They're missing Hello/Goodbye and Superstar though. Hello/Goodbye represents Michael's arterial ascension from Life to Afterlife, where as Superstar represents his spiritual denial from Heaven and Hell. They go between The Die and The Cool.

And I've always kind of equated Put You On Game with Streets On Fire as similar side-stories explaining the Streets and the Game. I guess Put You On game can be interpreted as him saying all that after Michael comes back, But I don't really see any obvious references to him acknowledging he's back.

Not trying to be an asshole, but is there any proof of this?  Specifically the part about Superstar, Sunshine and Handcuffs being apart of the story?

I don't really see Sunshine in all honesty. Handcuffs could explain how Michael got into the drug game and all that and give some backstory to how he became "The Cool".

Superstar is the basis for how he rises from the dead in the song "The Cool". I'll break down some of the earlier lines but after that it's pretty easy to get;

Yeah, uh
A fresh cool young Lu'
Tryna catch his microphone check 2, 1, 2
This part of the 1st verse cashes in on how a lot of religions or general thought from people assume that when you die and go to get judged for Heaven/Hell, you're in a young but mature state of your life to present yourself (Mid 20's for example). The "Tryna cash his microphone" line is Michael presenting the facts of his life in front of "God", or whoever judges the dead.

The world brought me to my knees, what have you brung you?
Did you improve on the design? Did you do somethin' new?
Well your name ain't on the guest list, who brung you?
You! The more famous person you come through
And the sexy lady next to you, you come too
Those lines represent the judgement brought on Michael. They signify that he hasn't done anything significant in life, but that he also hasn't done anything to warrant a death (Being that he was murdered). Then it goes on to say that the famous and sexy people of the world however can be judged, as they did something within their lifetime.

And then it hit me
Standin' outside of heaven waitin' for god to come and get me
I'm too uncouth
Unschooled to the rules and too gum shoe
Too much of a new comer and too un-cool
Like Shadow and Lavelle, I battle with it well
Tho I need holiday like lady who sung "Blue"
Go back, whatever you did you undo
Heavy as heaven
The devil on me, two ton's too
These lyrics are the realization Michael had about the afterlife. He understood that he didn't finish what he was meant to do in his life span and was essentially being offered a second chance to live it out, as well as atone for everything wrong he's done. The last 2 lines also symbolize how his impure actions are going to be magnified now, as he was given a 2nd chance at "life".

And you better wear your shades
The spotlights here can burn holes through the stage
Down to the basement pass the Indian graves
Where the dinosaurs laid
These lines symbolize Michael's journey through the ground of the earth as a spirit, back into his casket. He passes a bunch of hidden remains of the world's history as he looks for his body.

I'll stop it there in case you wanna try figuring it out on your own.

I like the analysis, but has Lupe ever came out and said out of his own mouth that Superstar is a part of The Cool story is that just your interpretation?

Handcuffs makes sense, but I sitll don't think it was Lupe's intention for that to be a part of the The Cool story.

In my opinion theres songs are undoubtedly about The Cool.

1. The Cool
2. The Coolest
3. Streets on Fire
4. The Die
5. Put You On Game
6. Real Recognize Real

am I missing one that's been confirmed?  I've heard He Say She Say is a part of it.

I've never seen anything by Lu about it other than "It's there" lol. The farthest I've ever looked for confirmation in his lyrics basically. If it mentions anything about The Streets, Game, Cool, or anything like "Michael Young History" there's usually more references. The first line of Superstar has "A Cool Young" and from there a lot of the lines just make sense as a sort of spiritual revival.

I see Hello/Goodbye as part of the story mainly because the title for the song has "uncool" in it. Without that I wouldn't have even looked into it tbh.

He Say, She Say is supposed to be Michael's child life, and the kind of "average" life of a kid growing up in the hood.
