Was Prince the first noteworthy artist to actually do this, or did he simply popularize it?

I don't know if Prince was the first to ever do it, however he was the first major/mainstream artist to do it. Apparently that much has been confirmed.

I mean, it's a pretty prevalent thing throughout Hip Hop. I'm just curious if that phenomenon might in some way be related to Prince. No reason to be such a dick about it. :dead:
