The Number One Rule of Conversation: Be Natural

As with most matters of etiquette and sociality, once you understand the ground rules, stop thinking about them so much and let things flow. You can follow all the above do’s and dont’s, but if it seems to others like your conversating by a checklist, then you might as well be waxing poetic about your butt hair. It doesn’t matter how polite you are if you come off as a phony. Drop the affectations. Talk about things that you’re comfortable talking about; use words that you’re comfortable using.

Conversation Skill #6

Blend asking the person good questions and revealing things about yourself (leading to more questions). Asking nothing but questions will make you annoying, but not asking any and talking about yourself will make you even more annoying. You want to talk about yourself just enough so that the person is interested in learning more.

When you're at ease and not being needy, nervous, or worried about what people think, and already anticipating a positive response, every other one of these techniques will be automatic. Being funny, eye contact, etc. those are all natural tendencies that people exude when in the right mind state. It's when you're guarded where you can't make eye contact or have a stifled voice. When focusing on "techniques" on how to make people respond positively, you already expect them not to, that's why you feel you need techniques in the first place.

OPs Conversation Skill #1 is the first, last, and only skill needed. Any other technique will do more harm than good.

You can be just as successful approaching conversation from a methodological viewpoint as from a 'visceral' (right word to use?) one, imo. Only thing required is a relaxed mind.
