Any Programmers?

2324 Views 110 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  Morel
Just wondering if there is any experienced programmers on KTT who could give some advice/tips regarding programming.

Software Engineering is a post secondary field I'm strongly considering and want to start programming.

So any advice? Like, what languages to start with? Best tutorials/books?

I was thinking of starting with C++, Java, Python maybe? Is that not a good idea, too advanced to start with or what? I know languages aren't just a two week book think and your done, your always learning them, gaining more knowledge. I would just like to know where the best place to start for someone like me with 0 programming experience at this point. Anything would be appreciated..

also I think it would be cool to develop some Apps (ioS) /Flash/Indie Games, so any tips on that would be welcome!

Probably won't get any replies but o well!

Oh and if someone knows of a great programming forum/website that would be more helpful to me than KTT, feel free to share :)

I just got a programming internship with a big financial company, we will be coding in C#, Java, and SQL. Anyone know of online websites/tutorials that could help me out?

how do you get an internship without any prior knowledge?

I have basic knowledge in the above three and good knowledge in other things (C++, JavaScript, HTML). Just looking for some good ways to practice before it stats.

the vids are pretty good
alright it took me a while to finish some hw the professor assigned. I got the coding but I had some issues with the footer.

but I'm currently in Grade 11 actually but I want a headstart on programming, and want to be able to do well in the programming competition next year. I plan on going to Uni in about a year from September so I do have awhile to learn these. Did you know no languages before you went into Uni or did you just know the basics and you went from there?
I have no idea how it is in Canada but Im guessing its the same as here :dno: if so learn Java over the summer and take the AP test I learned it well enough to get a 3 on the practice test in 3 weeks. Which isn't great but I'm hoping I can study more before my test and get a 4. Anyways a summer would be amazing time to learn a lot ik im gonna learn Java better and start learning how to make android apps with it and stuff over the summer :yar:
In my first year at uni studying Computer Science, we learnt Java as the first language :cryfam: i struggle quite abit with coding
Alright second week of HTML class, getting the hang of it :)
My CST class just starting learning Netbeans yesterday. :)
Pretty cool.

I want to learn to program, develop some Apps (ioS), Flash/Indie Games. I'm getting a Mac this summer. What language should I learn first? Also do programmers make good money ?

its impossible to jump into apps right away tbh

Objective C (Used for iOS) is pretty complex and you cant learn it as your first language.

Try C++ first (if you're having difficulty there, C first) then work your way up

Trying to make any games is hard, you need to master many concepts and programming in general to make games.
Start by learning basic programming before jumping into the gaming side of things.
