Hello fellow film-making community, I am here to ask for advice from you.

To tell the story better i'll present myself:

I am 21 years old and one year ago i decided that i've wasted too much damn time on my hands.

I've always wanted to do something important in my life, but i didnt knew what to do. I've always been keen on to music. But I cant sing and my productions sounded like toddler that play its little piano. I've joined university radio, did some interviews with big rappers (in my country and im from europe, so no kanye west or jayz tier level rappers, but they are one of the "biggest"/most famous in my country - so thats accomplishement for me). Radio wasnt enough for me so i joined University television and that was something monumental for me.

I've picked up the video editing part and since like 12-13 months i've been editing in adobe, modeling in c4d/blender everyday - making animations straight from my imagination.

I know it may sound stupid, but exact year ago i've had dream in which i made backflip and recorded it on camera. Boy i was so happy (in that dream) that i recorded it. And I belive in dreams that they tell me what current state im in.

I can mark this dream like a beginning in my timeline of the filmmaker career.
|Dream-----------------me now-----------------------where i want to be|

I've been making a lot of short films that were music themed - my first expirence with editing films was when i ws 6 y'o and i decided to mute scene of running horses and i put some very emotional music to it. This remake memory stucked with me ever since.

So, video editing and thinking how to capture a breathtaking moment with some sick visual effects is my ****.

Lately i've had 2-3 dreams in which i've been requested by some personas to ACT on a real scene. I didnt knew how to do it but I did it anyway. i did it by being mad at them that they want me to do something what i never did. Surprisingly, It came out really authentic and i thought to myself "wow, i didnt knew i can do that"

So maybe acting is something i didnt develop but is my talent?

I am very emotional high stressed introvert, that wont talk much in big groups of people. But oh boy oh boy if someone i lnow is interested in topic i love. I can really sell my opinions and their ideas so they will pick up this topic and get interested. I value everyone time so I talk ONLY about **** i have some background or interest in .

I know this is may sound ****ing weird, but whats not odd in this thing called life?

____

Here I am, asking you for advice. I know that I want to go to film school and do something I am good at.

I love expressing myself through telling stories with moving pictures. My next project which i am working is huge (for me). I've searched deep into myself and inspiration came bursting out of me. I made screenplay for animaton based on life of Prince.

It came so natural and i felt so refreshed when i finished the screnplay, i almost cryied of joy.

I feel like I have a lot of filmmaking talent. I love making weird voices and sound design.

I might have the whole filmmaking package (or im just really focused about it) I can edit videos, i can do screenplays, idk if I can act but my dreams told me so and i am def about to try to do it.

Which way should I go?

- screenplay
- Cartoons
- acting

I am very serious and shure about that it's what i want to do in my life. No regrets if I wont make it but it brings me so much joy. Like when kanye makes chipmunk beats https://youtu.be/irb335ThCdo

i feel same way when i do animation, screenplays, anything film-music related.

if you managed to read the whole thing i want to thank you for hearing me out.

Being perfectionist and editing my post for the 6th time because I am not satisfied till i paint the whole picture. :]

Edit: i know that going to film school is mostly for those people that are into the same purpose of making films. I dont know any filmmakers, and I sure that I wont be able to shoot a great film without precious opinions of others.

Daily uploads for YouTube aint enough for me. I work on one project for like 1 week to few months. I cant deliver half ass "ok, enough" project to the world.

Im not so sure the answer is that simple. I don't think it's our decision to tell you what you should pick.

You know yourself better than we do, all we know about you is what you typed.

But when it comes to this industry, sometimes the things you think you want to be doing doesn't happen. Instead you might get a different opportunity, sometimes the oppostunity is even better than you can imagine.

Learn as much as you can, get better at everything you're doing right now, so that you can have a lot of opportunities to work and grow. Everything will unfold for you.

I guess you're right.

Did you went to film school or learned on your own?

Its worth to mention that in Poland higher education is for free. I wouldn't be even considering going to school and learning "art" craft if it wasnt for the opportunities made by huge building full of dedicated in the same direction - people.

Maybe i'll put this way - Which skills are currently more desired in moviemaking industry?

- vfx / 3d modeling
- animation
- knowing equipement
- teaching software/problem solving

I feel like in these days you have to be everything at once. Knowing every aspect of your gear. Like which lightning is good for what, which microphones are good for particular enviroment, whats the advantage of different lenses. etc.

One of my favorite amateur yet mainstream film-makers are actors that make edits, and screenplays by themselves.

week ago i've watched some porn about some french couple that travels the world and makes mix of vlog and porn. It looks really professional like if Peter mckinnon started doing adult films.

I went to school, but not for film.

I did take some film classes, and it was nice being taught by people who were more knowledgable about film than I was. We had one guest speaker who eventually went onto be a supervising producer for the tv show Survivor. He was initially doing odd jobs around film and was mainly a set designer. He only became a producer out of luck. He was working as a set designer and repair man for around 10 years making very little before his big gig.

What I want to say is, if you're good at certain things keep working on them. Eventually you'll gain work for your skills, you might not be paid much for a long time. But you will build connections, use your connections as a launchpad.

It's not a glamorous journey though. But that's just my personal story i thought to share.

I'm not as passionate as i was about film as i was before, i consider myself a hobbyist now. I taught myself most things that i knew about film.

I'm not completely sure which skills are highly desirable in the industry currently though, sorry.

very down to earth perapective having you seem. *yoda voice*

Tbh. Its always worth the try when you are passionate about something. Maybe theres no huge salary at the beginning, but i'd rader be happy and poor, than rich and miserable doing what i hate.

Making stupid animations makes me happy. :mm: its amazing feeling to make something out of nothing. Just your imagination and tools (after effects)

i got something on the way, don't want to disclose too many details at the moment but I had a few questions

firstly, what is the best option to get equipment (just a camera, lighting and mic) on a low budget?

second, how much time do y'all dedicate to a project that is around 20-25 minutes in length?

Really interesting to watch the way a Hollywood screenwriter approaches a story. I feel like most people forget that Hollywood is so selective because of its small pool, that they attract some of the most talented screenwriters from around the world really who able to come up with anything in hours. This is nowhere near to what I do irl but I love seeing how other people think and solve problems in their own work environment.
