You are hearing wrong. Well, not normal multiplayer. The whole game is about online play, but there are no lobbies. You race against ghosts, some of which are people playing live at the same time as you (sort of like trackmania style), some that are more like traditional video game ghosts that are recorded runs made by friends etc.

I think they've already said they might put splitscreen in in a future update, so they might put a normal multiplayer mode in as well.

But by ghosts I don't just mean recorded ones; the ghosts can be live players, they just appear like ghosts and don't have collision.

So you can set it up as a private race/whatever, get everyone on the map then start the race by your own accord when everyone is ready.
