Wait. why did Ye decide to talk about this movie only when he's in my city?? HOW DID HE KNOW?! That's too crazy to be a coincidence

EDIT- HOLY **** YE STARTED RANTING/FREESTYLING ABOUT JODOROWSKY AND THE HOLY MOUNTAIN LAST NIGHT AT THE SHOW

THE BIGGEST W OF MY WHOLE LIFE

COMPLEX WROTE ABOUT IT

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING AND IS NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN- SERIOUSLY WEIRD ****, HARDCORE STANNING, REACHING, INTELLECTUAL DISCUSSION AND MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF OP ****RY. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

Just a developing theory, will add more info over time if more similarities pop up.

Here's The Holy Mountain in full, the movie most of these comparisons are based on

Made the following post in a thread about Ye's masks on the tour, just a couple shots in the dark

Kanye is a fan of Alexandro Jodorowsky, a radical filmmaker who's best movie is called The Holy Mountain (I know he's a fan because the poster for the movie along with several other Jodorowsky pictures were found in the code of his website).

In the movie, a jesus look-alike with a literal demon on his back (could be who Ye identifies with in the film) seeks the meaning of life from an alchemist who makes literal **** into literal gold (Jay Z? Idk probably not).

The alchemist assembles together a group of the world's most powerful artists, religious leaders, politicians, weapon makers, and billionaires to go on a quest to find The Holy Mountain, where they can achieve immortality by becoming gods. All of these powerful people are vain, cruel people btw.

The wise man tells everyone to destroy the riches and possessions they own before they can go on the quest. They toss away everything and go on a beautiful, dark, twisted mission to find the mountain.

Once they finally locate it, the Jesus guy is told by the wise man that he does not need to climb the mountain to find the answer, because along the way he has found an ex-hooker wife who loves him (Kim) and a child to take care of (Nori). He goes on his own way while the wise man leads the billionaires up the mountain, and reveals to them that the meaning of life is that they are all subjects in a movie, and that the mountain is just a soundstage.

Is this 100% what Kanye was thinking of when he designed the set and the masks? No, probably not. But the influence is clear.

TL;DR - Go watch The Holy Mountain cuz that movie is bonkers, then come back and re-read this.

To add to that, there are also the repeated motifs of becoming a god, the mixture of hedonistic urges with religious symbolism, political corruption, barking dogs, radical transformation, and the zodiac throughout both Yeezus and The Holy Mountain.

There's also a Black Skinhead in both :omg: (Watch from the 45 minute mark onward, **** is wild.)

There's a great quote I pulled from an analysis of the movie that does a good job explaining Yeezus as well:

"Though many find The Holy Mountain‘s narrative weak (if not frustratingly obscure), the story does easily break into three acts: the Thief’s adventures in the city, his apprenticeship to the Alchemist inside the tower, and the trip to and ascent of the Holy Mountain itself.  Each segment has its own aesthetic sensibility, while retaining their essentially demented Jodorowskyness, and together they form a loose allegory about the soul’s quest for enlightenment: from living in a corrupt world to the first stirrings of a spiritual sense to the actual climb towards enlightenment."

This is also a good analysis of Ye's career as a whole.

EDIT: Fast forward to now, and I'm looking at the footage of Ye debuting that new song snippet (I am not here right now, I am not at home etc etc) and the strings in there sounded mad familiar

Starts at 2:48

From the soundtrack to The Holy Mountain

Am I the only one who thinks they sound similar?

Another Edit:

More proof of Kanye's Jodorowsky fandom- There's some similarities between the Runaway movie and The Holy Mountain.

First off, the color pallets in both movies are nearly identical. Before you call that a reach, keep in mind that Ye is the dude who said that the majority of Yeezus was inspired by a lamp.

The parade from All Of The Lights is an almost shot-for-shot recreation of two similar parades found in The Holy Mountain and the art film Cremaster Cycle

His dinner sequence in the Runaway movie looks eerily similar to the dinner one of the billionaires in The Holy Mountain holds ( at the 1:12:00 mark). Both take place in giant, empty rooms where a group of rich socialites sit at an absurdly long table eat what looks like giant phoenix legs before the host interrupts the party to conduct a dance. In Runaway, it's the ballerinas. In THM, it's getting a feather covered tranny to lead a naked white girl into a coffin. Both also feature similar party guests. (in Runaway, it's black people in all white. In THM, it's white people in black tuxedos)

SERIOUS REACHING:

this

reminds me alot of

one of these guys

just sayin

and if we wanna get on some real conspiracy ****

There are 9 "new Kanye" songs on Yeezus, plus Bound 2 (old Kanye), each dealing with a different personality aspect of Ye. He's rich and bored, he ****s too much, he's an artist, he's a warrior, etc.

There are 9 people searching for the Holy Mountain, each dealing with a different aspect of culture. There are bored millonaires, nymphomaniacs, successful artists, military leaders, etc.

The movie ends with a genuinely sweet moment- the Jesus look-alike walks away from trying to become a god, takes a prostitute as his wife and becomes the father to a literal monkey child (not being racist thats the ending)

The album ends with a genuinely sweet moment- Bound 2, where Ye drops the edginess and talks about falling in love with a woman many consider a glorified prostitute (who is about to make him a father). Just sayin.

EDITS ON EDITS ****

istillhaveitmyway with the exclusive

you can add 4:30 (OP Note: 4:30 mark in The Holy Mountain)

it looks JUST LIKE when the Naked girls are carrying Kanye for I Am A God

EDIT: More similarities

GOAT EDIT: Warhol came through with the extremely #rare #based knowledge for ya broke ass
here just fix my post in OP with this edit that way its all together

]

the whole film is based off the Ascent of Mount Carmel
Written between 1578 and 1579 in Granada, Spain, after his escape from prison, the Ascent is illustrated by a diagram of the process outlined in the text of the Soul's progress to the summit of the metaphorical Mount Carmel where God is encountered. The work is divided into three sections and is set out as a commentary on four poetic stanzas by John on the subject of the Dark Night. John shows how the Soul sets out to leave all worldly ties and appetites behind to achieve "nothing less than transformation in God".

inb4 Thread flopped or "didn't read OP is a ****", don't waste your time. I dont give a **** if this flops or not, gonna end up using this for a term paper and I need to get these ideas on a page.

that someone better not be a ****, this movie is without a doubt the strangest thing you'll ever see. Anyone looking for a straightforward plot will be disappointed. Very gorey as well tbh.

Still my #1 film tho :allears:

I like the thread, not gonna watch the movie that starts with a dark clothed guy posing like a Baphomet(?) at 4 am.
And yeah the Runaway dinner scene looks the same as the one in the movie.
What's your point though, op?

already saw it a few years back, I'm still trying to tie the movie with the concept of Yeezus but I'll report back my findings.

Just that Ye is paying a lot of tribute to a relatively unknown film legend. Kanye isn't as open as other artists about who he takes inspiration from, and people should know. I think it's good to point out the artists of the past who influence the artists we stan today. Opens up new topics of conversation, encourages people to put a lot of thought into what they're listening to, etc.

There aren't gonna be many direct parallels, but if you're open enough to have seen THM already and enjoyed it, you can find the similarities. Ye and Jodorowsky  both have gone on record saying that people are meant to find individual meaning in their projects and come to their own conclusions.

Was watching some of it and there is some very weird visuals. Also about the codes on Ye's website, what exactly are codes and what is the reason for them on the website? I don't really know computers like that.

All websites are built through code, like HTML or C++. It's not a secret language or anything
