Looking forward to the show, but it's apparently getting some middling reviews. http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/television/2012/06/25/120625crte_television_nussbaum http://www.huffingtonpost.com/maureen-ryan/the-newsroom-review-aaron-sorkin-hbo_b_1609544.html?utm_hp_ref=tv http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/newsroom-tv-review-aaron-sorkin-jeff-daniels-emily-mortimer-335598 |

Quote Characters never stop speechifying to one another, replacing believable dialogue with that unmistakably Sorkinesque logorrhea of righteous self-importance. It’s a puppet show with Sorkin as the only hand, expressing his displeasure with the tenor of public discourse. (Which everyone knows has reached an unctuous low.) “The Newsroom” is principally concerned with how American society has been ruined by the blaring insipidity of our 24-7 media culture. The theme song swells with a collage of images of the founding fathers of television news, but if Edward R. Murrow is watching, I suspect he’s chuckling in his grave rather than spinning in it. (Fun fact: Murrow was cremated.) http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/tv/hbos-the-newsroom-aaron-sorkin-has-an-on-air-meltdown/2012/06/20/gJQApxuMqV_print.html |

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, I really like the idea of being in a newsroom. It's exciting, and if handled right, it could be an incredible show. However, I wonder how much you could REALLY DO with an entire season with just the news element. I remember when The Wire tried to tackle it in the last season, and I actually thought the News portions were the worst thing about that season (and maybe even the entire show). Was it interesting in parts? Sure. But not sure if news is THAT interesting to shape an entire season around (let alone an entire show). That's where the "sensationalism" comes in. Those "feel good" vibrant moments where the orchestral score soars, and you feel like the show is about something bigger. I'm not sure those moments really landed for me. It felt like I was watching Field of Dreams, or some blockbuster movie about America (heightened patriotism). But of course, that's kind of the point. Because getting back to what I said above, I'm not sure a show like this can stand on its own just by the premise. So you have these big moments, that are very cinematic. And I got to say, it felt very odd for an HBO show. I wasn't sure if I wanted to clap my hands or cringe. Maybe a little bit of both. I dunno. Maybe it's the TV snob in me. I've become accustomed to serious dramas and realism (although I am willing to budge. Breaking Bad is my favorite show on TV. And while it is very realistic, there are moments of heightened drama where you have to suspend your disbelief. It's not the Wire level of realism but it uses that to its benefit. It uses it effectively). What did you guys think? I wouldn't call the premiere a home run. But I didn't hate it. Kind of felt like well, a feel good summer blockbuster movie. I'm not sure if that can sustain itself for an entire season. I'm not sure I will want to watch that for an entire season. But I'm willing to stick around for a little bit, and see how they develop it. Rating: C |

Aaron Sorkin Sure. But doesn't mean the style always works. Honestly, I didn't care for the tone of the show in parts. I get that it's his shtick, but I don't really feel it was as well executed as his past work. Just me though. |

I thought it was decent. I'm hooked for now because the pilot made me really curious about whatever happened between Will and Mackenzie in the past. What do you guys think it was?

Pilots are a ****ty judge of a show, do the critics just watch the pilots? but I really enjoyed the first episode. Yeah it's preachy and it's really just Aaron sorkin saying what he believes through a character medium, but I'm ****in with it.

I didn't love the pilot as much as I hoped I would. There were some really great moments, and some dreadful ones. Daniels was great, but it was Mortimer who stole the show imo. Casting her was a brilliant choice. The amount of bad press this show has gotten so far is ridiculous tbh. First, some of the critics decide to **** on 'Girls', and now this? Let's calm the **** down. The pilot wasn't perfect, but that was only the first episode. There's actually more to this. 'The Newsroom' deserves a fair chance, and that's why I'm going to stick with it this season. I find the subject matter very interesting, the characters(though, not all of them) intriguing, and I'm really looking forward to what's next. Oh, and **** Don! I'm on Team Jim, baby!!! |
