You definitely have to be immersed in the world when playing this game, especially if you didn't play first one.  It was definitely exhausting trying to keep up with this game the first couple of hours. Reading the entire journal entries of everything is a must, otherwise you'd get lost.

I felt the same way mid-way through Flotsam, but I got hooked on the sidemissions from there.  I agree the map is complete ass.  I don't even bother to look at it tbh lol.
