Nykur

We have done an article on northern monsters before and this one is no less infamous in Nordic folklore.

Nykur is a creature that looks just like an ordinary horse and most often comes in various grey hues. The only difference being that the nykur has his hoofs on backwards. In any other way he appears just like an ordinary horse yet his intentions and actions are that of a horrible monster that people have learned to fear.

The Nykur has been known by many names, Nykur being the most common. It is also simply called water horse or by the names Nennir, Nóni, Vatnaskratti (Water devil) and Kumbur.

One of the distinguishing trades that the nykur is known by is his appearance in and around water. It is most often seen close to lakes and rivers and in some cases the sea. This has been reported in Nordic countries and perhaps even other parts of the worlds. It has even been said that during winter when lakes are frozen over and the explosive sound of breaking ice is heard, that it is the neighing of a Nykur.

The nykur likes to lure unsuspecting people to sit on its back, which it will allow just as a friendly horse would. When the person has climbed on top it will leap into the nearest source of water and drown the helpless victim.

Few details are known of this creature but it is said that to drive one of you only have to say their name as they hate to hear their name. It has also been said that a Nykur can have offspring with horses and the result from such a union is a horse like any horse. Yet it is known that if anyone tries to ride such a horse over a stream or a body of water he will lay down as soon as he feels water upon his chest.

History

In 1962 the  Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (The Atomic and Alternative Energy Energies Commission) started construction on this site. It was a heavy water reactor but in 1971 it was changed to a US Model pressurized water reactor.

The Government was warned by the locals that this area was cursed and haunted by years of Satanic rituals and murders. They, of course, did not listen.

On August 15, 1975 two explosions destroyed a turbine. A terrorist group called the Liberation Front of Brittany claimed responsibility. In 1979 the same terrorists succeeded in destroyed the power lines coming from the plant. With no way to supply the power generated by the station the French Government shut the plant down.

In 1985 the plant was completely shut down and decommissioned. This site is currently being demolished and all radioactive substances have been removed. The containment building, reactor pressure valve and steam turbines and currently being destroyed and/or removed.

Legends and Paranormal Activity

The locals call this place the Gates Of Hell as it is rumored that a Gateway to Hell exists here. Apparitions of a large black dog are reported said to be a Hellhound. The apparition of a little girl said to have been sacrificed in a Satanic ritual is seen wandering the area. Strange growls and cries are heard in the woods. People have reported feeling like they are being watched and an intense feeling of unease. There are powerful dark creatures said to walk the woods here.

Capetown, South Africa, Castle Of Good Hope

History

Built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company, it is the oldest colonial building in South Africa. It was built as a replenishment station  for ships traveling between The Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). The castle was built up over the years and used as a prison in the Second Boer War (1899-1902). In 1936 it was declared a National Monument and extensive renovations were done the 1980's to bring the structure back to its former glory. The site also was used as the local headquarters for the South African Army but is now used as military museum.

Legends and Paranormal Activity

In both 1915 and 1947 the apparition of man was seen on the castle's battlements walking between the Leerdam and Oranje bastions - both times he was seen for a period of weeks. Phantom footsteps are heard in this area as well. The apparition of a large black dog is seen on the grounds that leaps at people before disappearing.  The castle's bell rings on its own after a guard hung himself on the rope hanging from it.  In the guard room disembodied voices of a man and a woman are heard arguing. The lights in the Buren bastion turn on and off on their own. The apparition of a former Governor is seen walking the castle's grounds. The apparition of a "grey lady" is also seen in the castle. Other activity - objects moving on their own, light anomalies, shadow figures and the feeling of being watched.

East Maitland, Australia, Old Maitland Gaol

History

Although the construction of the first permanent buildings did not begin until 1846 this location was used as a jail as early as 1843 when 2 men were hung for the murder of a child. It was officially opened in 1848. Public executions were held at the main gate until 1861 to large crowds and 16 men were executed in the prison (although it debatable where they happened after 1861) between 1849 and 1897 (when all executions were stopped) for rape and murder. The last man executed in May of 1897 was convicted of raping his step-daughter but maintained his innocence until he was hung. Corporal punishment was continued until 1905 with flogging being the most common punishment.

In 1975 there was a prison riot which resulted in the maintenance building being burned. The 78 rioting prisoners were all moved to other prisons. In 1977 there was a mass escape of 7 prisoners but all were back in custody within 2 hours. In 1980 a large escape was discovered and the man who told prison officials about was shortly thereafter found with his throat slit so violently he was very nearly decapitated. In 1993 a new wing was constructed only for prisoners who had committed the worst crimes keeping them completely separated from the general population.

On January 31, 1998 Maitland Goal was closed down permanently - it was longest continually used prison in Australia. It has since been converted into a museum and tourist attraction.

Apparitions of former staff and inmates on the grounds, on the wall and inside of the buildings. The apparition of an inmate who rocks back and forth at the door to his former cell. The feelings of being watched, followed and not wanted. Empathic sensations of sadness and extreme violence. Doors opening and closing on their own. Unexplained bangs, scrapes and other noises as well as disembodied whispers. Other activity: light anomalies, unexplained mists, shadow figures and unexplained temperature changes.

We also came across a legend that a inmate in Cell C in Block 4 made a deal with Satan before committing suicide by setting himself on fire. This is said to be proven by Satanic symbols drawn on the wall of the cell. The unfortunate guard who had to clean up the mess left behind was said to be a grounded man but he went home broke his bathroom mirror and slashed his wrists with the broken glass. Before bleeding to death he apparently wrote a message with his own blood claiming that he needed to die to stop the Satanic forces from escaping into the world. Cell C Block 4 was padlocked shut and remains so to this day.

Beelitz, Germany, Beelitz-Heilstätten Sanatorium

History

Built in 1898 in the southwest section of Berlin, this facility was originally designed  as a sanitarium for the care and treatment of those suffering from tuberculous - a lethal respiratory disease that killed hundreds of thousands before the advent of antibiotics. It was taken over in World War I as a military hospital and even treated a young corporal by the name of Adolf Hitler in 1916 for a wound received at the the Battle Of Somme.

When Nazi Germany fell in 1945 and Germany was divided in two countries the USSR took over the facility and it was converted into a Soviet military hospital. Strangely; even after the fall of the USSR the Soviet Union kept control of the hospital until 1995. Once the Russians vacated many attempts were made to privatize the facility but all failed. Today, some buildings are still used but most of the facility remains abandoned.

It covers and immense area of land and has been called an urban explorer's paradise. During our research we found no stories of people being charged with trespassing; exploration of this area seems to be largely ignored by the authorities.

Almost every aspect of paranormal activity has been reported at this facility including, apparitions, shadow figures, light anomalies, mysterious mists, disembodied voices, phantom footsteps, electrical disturbances, objects moving and disappearing on their own, doors and windows opening and closing on their own, people being touched, poked, pushed and pulled by invisible presences, feeling of intense sadness, disease and of being watched, all manner of unexplained noises including bangs, screams, moans, growls and crashes and more.

Los Angeles, California, Linda Vista Hospital

History

This hospital in East LA closed its doors in 1990. It was used by many film crews as sets for movies. It has been converted onto a set of apartment lofts. It is rumored to have closed due to too many unexplained patient deaths

Apparitions of former patients and staff. The apparition of a doctor has been seen looking out of one of the corner windows across the front lawn. The sounds of a little girl laughing and playing by the front sign - it is said she was struck and killed by a car here. Faint green lights have seen glowing the building. Flickers of candlelight have been seen and are followed by screams and moans. A horrible stench has been reported on the third floor. The apparition of a female patient in a hospital gown near the entrance. Cold spots, shadow figures, light anomalies, disembodied voices and phantom footsteps.

Dartmouth, Massachusetts, Lincoln Park

History

Opened in 1894 by the Union Street Railway Company in order to increase tourism on their rail line. Slowly over the years the park slowly built up and more and more rides were built but the crowning glory of the park (and also its eventual downfall) was the roller coaster "The Comet" - opened in 1946. For its time "The Comet" was the ultimate in roller coasters; passengers even carried sandbags with them to weigh down the cars in order to make it go faster than even gravity permitted.

Although 100's of accidents (some resulting in fatalities)  were reported in the park's nearly 100 year history "The Comet" received the most negative attention. In the mid-60's a man was killed on a downhill slope on the coaster. In 1968 the back car of the coaster detached and rolled backwards until derailing and throwing its passengers out - multiple people were hurt in this incident. In the mid-80's a park worker fell off the tracks to his death. In 1986 another man was killed while attempting to climb from one car to another while the ride was in motion.

Previous to the 1986 season the park owner's had dumped  $75,000 into the park but the fatal accident along with a test run on "The Comet" resulted in the brakes failing and back car falling off the tracks to the ground sounded the death knell for the park. It now sits abandoned and although a lot of the buildings have now burned down the remnants of "The Comet" still remain slowly crumbling away. The area is presently slated for demolishment and the creation of a large residential neighbourhood.

Legends and Paranormal Activity

Faint misty apparitions of former patrons (probably those killed in accidents) have been reported. Phantom cries and screams (some in terror and some in delight) have been heard. Phantom carnival music is also heard As well there are reports of disembodied voices and phantom footsteps. Time slips in which the park appears as it was when it was fully operating. Other activity: touches by invisible presences, light anomalies, interference with battery operated devices and a general feeling of unease and of being watched.

Vineland Station, Ontario, Prudhomme's Landing (Wet N'Wild)

Ahhh - the author rubs his hands together - been waiting a while to do this one. This website is filled with locations said to be haunted but like Erie Beach, Alma College or Whitby Psych not only have I been there but I am happy to include this former amusement park as one of the most active places I've ever investigated.

History

While it remains difficult to get an exact date on when this park opened it seems to have closed in 2002 - probably at the end of that summer season. At its height the park contained a water park including water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river and water bumper boats; bumper cars, a large mini-golf park, bumper cars, a Tilt-A-Whirl, a go-kart track and a famous haunted house.  The haunted house has long since burned down but it was famous for its "chicken doors" allowing patrons to frightened to exit immediately and very publicly much to their embarrassment. 

Reasons for the  park's closure vary with the most believed is is that it went bankrupt. I have spoken with a former employee who worked there the last few years before the closing. His story confirms bankruptcy but also tells stories of numerous accidents involving both staff and visitors resulting in law suits and bribes made to Provincial safety inspectors which also lead to the money issues and the park's closing.

As to the reason for the haunting - we're not completely sure.  It is strange for a former amusement park to become so active. It may be due the former use for the land which we have been unable to dig up a history for as much paranormal activity was reported even before the park closed.

Apparitions of former visitors - quite possibly from fatal accidents - the author has seen the apparition of a young boy near the former location of the Tilt-A-Whirl as well as others. A large amount dark energy (very strange for an amusement park) resulting in powerful feelings of fear, unease and of being watched. Investigators have been possessed. Time slips to a time when the park was still operating. Interference with electronic devices. The phantom smell of chlorine. Phantom sounds including laughing, voices, music and screams - entry into the park with walkie-talkies resulted in so many voices being received that the equipment had to be turned off.. An unexplained sense of extreme danger almost as if there was something present that meant you great danger. Other activity: light anomalies, shadow figures, touches and shoves by invisible presences, mysterious mists and feelings of oppression.
