Im not really sure , I know in Ireland he is one of the big 3 rappers, Em, Ye and Jay. But people dont really know many of his songs compared to what they know of ye and em. People just know he is jay z and recognise his status. Im talking about the general public btw. Kanye and Em would be more popular tho

He incorporated different genres to reach the top. With Linkin Park, Rock, to get a bigger white crowd. The Kingdom Come and his hits such as, Hard Knock Life have a very Pop Feeling which, appeals to the white masses. The album with R Kelly bringing in another audience. He has slowly dumbed down his lyrics album by album so, it seems seamless to get in a bigger audience too. Basically, he slowly sold out to reach the top

A lot of rappers have hits, but to be a big 'star' you would need to push albums too, or at least be consistant with the hits. He connected with the UK here and there with a couple of songs, but he didn't get 'big big' until BP3..
