Im not really sure , I know in Ireland he is one of the big 3 rappers, Em, Ye and Jay. But people dont really know many of his songs compared to what they know of ye and em. People just know he is jay z and recognise his status. Im talking about the general public btw. Kanye and Em would be more popular tho

his lyrics go over so many peoples head so they think he talks about random bull****. Then sometimes he has to dumb his music down just for people to understand then they think hes not that good. if Jay came out with a whole introspective album everyone would be mind ****ed. Dude is just a pure genius

totally agree
in France, they dont know a lot about him

but Beyonce,BP3 and WTT helped A LOT for his popularity

He incorporated different genres to reach the top. With Linkin Park, Rock, to get a bigger white crowd. The Kingdom Come and his hits such as, Hard Knock Life have a very Pop Feeling which, appeals to the white masses. The album with R Kelly bringing in another audience. He has slowly dumbed down his lyrics album by album so, it seems seamless to get in a bigger audience too. Basically, he slowly sold out to reach the top

He was no where near the global figure that he projects himself to be

Em,50,Ye overseas >> jay z overseas

Yes was he. I lived in London and everybody he was heavily promoted there also europe. he had a hits on charts there for years.

Jay-Z is regarded as a legend in hip hop. whether you like it or not.

Moz is right, Jay never had a top 10 album in the UK before BP3, nor did he have a platinum album in the UK pre-BP3 either.

Kanye, Beyonce and Rihanna helped him ****loads. Jay has never been big 'numbers' wise WW, he's always been known though.

and those hits made him big during that time as well. he sold out concerts in 1997 when he tour the UK.  when he released an album ievery year it hit he top 10 urban charts.

Jay was a big hip hop star after a Hard Knock Life.

Linkin park/Jay-Z album was pretty well known to.

Hard Knock Life put him into mainstream.   His first big record IMO.....before Beyonce...before Kanye.  His first #1 record.  Most of y'all really don't have your facts right.  Hard Knock Life.  Can I get A....  Nigga What, Nigga Who.

A lot of rappers have hits, but to be a big 'star' you would need to push albums too, or at least be consistant with the hits. He connected with the UK here and there with a couple of songs, but he didn't get 'big big' until BP3..
