My brother finds it ok until exam time then he studies 10-10. Where are you going med school?

Hey guys!

So I am going to be a first year medical student starting in August, and I'm super nervous and scared, tbh. I feel like I'll never have a social life ever again, stop visiting KTT, stop listening to new music, stop playing new games and movies. Just eat and study for 4 years.

Someone calm my fears.
Congrats! I too, will be start medical school in August. From what I've heard and gathered (in talking to med students and doctors) medical school (and the life of a health care professional) is more about time management then anything. Yes, time spent surfing the web and gaming will most likely have to be cut down, but it doesn't mean that you won't have a social life. Many of your classmates will be in the same situation, so you'll most likely be able to form new friends and networks and whatnot.
Good luck on your path! What school will you be attending, if you don't mind me asking?

not me, but I got 2 friends entering their second year.

from what they tell me, the first year is pretty easy, don't worry too much.

if you're interested and you know that you need to work for it, you won't have problems.

Nah I can't post my med school here. Medical school classes are so small that you could easily pick me out from the class and I wouldn't want to have my future professional life linked to KTT where I say questionable/funny **** from time to time.

That forum will help you out better than anyone on these forums can. That said, my cousin finished med school two years ago, and is only a couple years from completing his Psych residency. He had a social life, and didn't change up much from college as far as studying went. He said it was just the sheer volume of knowledge he had to absorb more so than it was difficult. There's a popular analogy for med school.

Medical school is like trying to eat five pancakes every morning for breakfast.

You know you can do it. A Premed advisory committee endorsed you saying, “He has the stomach for it. He’s committed.” And you prove them all right. Every day you show up with your first-year optimism and your annoying hunger for learning and you clean that plate (just kidding, it’s adorable). But you begin to notice that those pancakes are slowing you down a little each day and the sugar highs and lows are screwing with your sleep. Smart person that you are, you decide to pass on the flapjacks one day. You think to yourself, “Self, I’m going to eat ten pancakes tomorrow so that I don’t have to eat any today.”

But it never stops. Turns out that “self” isn’t the most responsible lender, and before you know it there are 40 pancakes in front of you and your plate needs to be clean by tomorrow. So yeah, at this point it looks impossible. But really, it’s your fault.

While it sounds doom and gloom, it is doable. The first two years are most likley going to suck, but I've heard it's all worth it when you finally get to roam the wards in your 3rd and 4th year. If you're intelligent enough to get accepted, you're intelligent enough to balance your social life & also study. They wouldn't have accepted you if they thought otherwise. You'll do fine breh.

I plan on going to to dental school. I wanted to go to med school but realized that the lifestyle was not appealing. I agree that the studentdoctor forum is an amazing tool.

Good luck dude. I don't think I could ever handle the amount of knowledge you need to know.

Yeah, just finished my first year,
Forst 2 terms were great, always out and had a great social life, them came back to third term and worked like that in the library like that for a month before exams,
Found out I passed the other day so was worth it.

Only advice is what some of our tutors told us. Don't let medicine take over and make time to go out and socialise and relax
