There’s getting a retweet from the hottest artist in music, and then there’s getting a record deal from the hottest artist in music. Recently signed to G.O.O.D Music, Teyana Taylor has expectations that may “touch the sky” in ways Kanye West might not have imagined. However, she seems ready for the challenge. Her latest mixtape, The Misunderstandings of Teyana Taylor, has created a buzz about as big as her vibrant style; her role in West’s Cruel Summer film, inspired by his label’s upcoming compilation, catapults her into a light that’s finally for her talents instead of her celebrity.

While she’s making moves in the music industry, there’s still commentary from the blog universe regarding her “hood” persona and troubled past. Well, this is a Sound Check, which puts a focal point on a talent that has been acknowledged by musical geniuses such as Beyoncé and Kanye West. Even though we can’t front like she didn’t work the red carpet premiere of Cruel Summer. Read on as we make an effort to understand Teyana Taylor.

Soul Train: How does that feel to be signed to Kanye’s label?

Teyana Taylor: It feels good. As far as what we’ve already had going on, and just the way we dress, I feel good in the way we connect.

ST: So tell me about your experience in Paris for the premiere of Cruel Summer. I know that had to be as laid out with Kanye behind all of this!

TT: It was. We were covered as we entered on camels, plus the film is dope!

ST: Exactly what role do you play in Cruel Summer?

TT: Just small roles. I played a cabbie and another one, but that’s about it. Nothing big.

ST: Let’s get into your recent mixtape The Misunderstandings of Teyana Taylor, which from the title has a connection with the Lauryn Hill classic.  I want to understand how deep that connection goes. Would you care to elaborate on the connections between the two projects?

TT: There is a whole generation of artists who draw from her for inspiration. The title and the album are so great, but I was more inspired by the whole meaning and purpose because it fit me so perfectly because that’s what I’ve experienced and what I’ve been through.

ST: A miseducation?

TT: Yeah, but also the misunderstanding people have of me.

ST: Ok, because I can definitely see it with how often you’ve been in the press for things that have little to do with your music or career. Was that your ultimate goal, to address that kind of haterism?

TT: Yeah, but I mainly wanted to give people a better understanding of who I am. There are people who have been following my career so I really wanted to focus on my music and prepare for my album.

ST: Yes, the world has been waiting on an official album from you! So now that the mixtape is out, are you working on any music especially under G.O.O.D Music?

TT: I’ve been working on the G.O.O.D Music album, but that’s about it. I’ll be working on a couple more videos from the mixtape.

Last year after "Dark Fantasy" she was really excited like "I'm in a new GOOD Situation" and all then she got quiet. I guess they want to keep a lot of stuff under wraps.

Trueee. She's doing great work with Ye though. Dark Fantasy, Christmas In Harlem and the 2nd Cruel Summer Snippet are all great.
