There are few people in life that are so polarizing and talented at what they do that they become a symbol for your generation.

LeBron is that for us.

I was first introduced to LeBron as a 12 year old kid when I I recieved the Sports Illustrated pictured above. The words “The Chosen One” in bold letters seemed like the most lofty expectations to set for a 17 year old kid EVER.

As a basketball player myself, I needed a superstar to look up to. I needed a player to follow throughout his career. Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson were cool, but it is hard to really relate and root for a player when you didn’t get a chance to follow them throughout their early playing days. LeBron was the perfect player to follow, at the perfect time.

I got the chance to watch LeBron shortly after this SI cover came out… and I couldn’t believe what I was “witnessing”.

“Wait… he’s 6’9??? He plays like this???

“Wait… he’s 6’9??? He plays like this???

Wait… he’s unselfish???

Wait… he’s a good teammate??”

It didn’t even seem real. He didn’t seem real. He was a bigger than life character… and this was only in high school.

The generation above me covered their walls with Jordan posters…

I felt like I had found the new Jordan. And I don’t like comparing the 2 because they are so different. But this kid was already my basketball role model.

I cut out newspaper pictures of him and hung them on my wall. I bought headbands. I made a point to catch his high school games on TV.

As expected, LeBron went #1 in the draft. I watched his first NBA game against the Sacramento Kings. I watched nervously thinking that maybe he was all hype.

Didn’t take much time for me to figure out son is for real.

Final stats-25 pts 6 rebs 9 asts and 4 steals.

I was watching young Simba, and this dude was gonna be the king. I couldnt wait for the rest of his career.

Time passed, and LeBron continued to make plays and put up stats that you only see on a video game. It seemed like once a game he’d make a play and everyone you are watching it with would be like

The attitude of the public quickly shifted from  ”He is an amazing talent.” to “He needs to win a championship.”

And honestly, every single playoff run in Cleveland seemed like a tremendous accomplishment.

His supporting cast in Cleveland was the equivalent of the 7 ****ing dwarfs and their names were Sucky, Poopy, ****ty, Bad at Basketbally, Cant Scorey, Cant Believe you do this for a living-y, and Go **** yourselfy.

LeBron was trying to climb Mt. Everest with his bare hands son.

Mo Williams was his 2nd best player and he doesnt start for the Clippers.

I cant believe people are still butthurt over Lebron leaving Cleveland.

That was 2 years ago… get over it. You sound like a bitter ex boyfriend.

You know what? I hope LeBron ****ed your ex girlfriend

He gave the city of Cleveland 6 great years… and in return… they didnt give him 1 decent player to play with.

A washed up Antwaan Jamison?

A fat out of shape Shaq?

Seriously?

Cleveland should blame themselves for trolling LeBron like that.

Do I wish LeBron could have stayed in Cleveland his whole career?

Of course.

Do I think he was wrong for how he did “The Decision.”

Yes.

But if announcing where you are going to play next season on national television and donating all profits to a charity is the worst thing he does in his career…

OH WELL. IT DIDN”T KILL ANYONE. HE DIDN’T RAPE ANYONE. HE DIDN’T GET ARRESTED.

And then you have the people that get all emotional because of the “Not 1. Not 2. Not 3…” incident…

Although he probably shouldn’t have said it… What did you think their goal was?

Do you think they came together and said “Yo guys… our goal is to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. That would be awesome.”

He put in to words exactly what the expectations were. Deal with it.

Oh and Michael Jordan didnt play with superstars?

You do know Pippen and Rodman are Hall of Famers right?

Now… do you think Bosh is gonna be a Hall of Famer??

Don’t come at me with that Jordan argument.

Anyways, the Heatles were born and LeBron was Paul McCartney.

Every game was a must see. LeBron took the interest of the NBA to the next level. He made people care about every regular season game.

Now… the finals against the Mavericks?

I was truly disappointed in LeBron. For once the critics were absolutely right.

He sucked. He disappeared in the 4th quarter. I was just sitting there watching like

The LeBron fans took the loss there son.

Im convinced that LeBron just does anything in life that puts more pressure on himself.

LeBron is the type of guy to volunteer himself for The Hunger Games and make a promise to everyone before he goes into the game that he wont use any weapons. Just to add pressure on himself.

Watching his career has been a ****ing roller coaster of a ride.

And FINALLY… this year… he became the player that we all knew he could become. He made clutch plays, he lead the team, he took responsibility for his mistakes, he became a better person and player.

Most importantly… HE WON THE TITLE.

I dont know how you could see those reactions and not be happy for the man. Even if you dont like him.

I knew it was a huge relief for him, and it was for me too.

Ive had the pleasure of following his career from high school. I think sometimes we forgot that he was just a kid when he came in the league. 18 years old is way too young of an age for someone constantly getting picked a part by the world… and LeBron’s mistakes have been absolutely minimal for his circumstances. ****, my mistakes have been worse than his, and I dont have pressure on me, nor am I in the spotlight.

I come from a generation where our parents EXPECT us to go to college. EXPECT us to get a good degree. EXPECT us to get a good job. And none of that **** is easy. Sometimes we fail. Sometimes it takes longer to achieve those goals. Sometimes we are too immature to do those things.

LeBron has failed plenty of times. LeBron’s championship may have taken longer than it should have. LeBron was immature.

I can relate to his struggle.

Rarely we see someone with so much hype actually LIVE UP TO THE HYPE.

The older generations are constantly giving it to my generation saying “Music isn’t as good as it used to be. Sports were better back in my day.”

And our generation doesn’t help either. Instead of fully embracing someone as great as LeBron… we are split down the middle with haters and fans. We STILL defend Jordan even though we didn’t get to fully see his career. We don’t realize the greatness that is right in front of us. It is easy to be nostalgic about how the past is better than the present.

But I realize what we “witnessed” and are “witnessing.”

My dad constantly tells me how great Larry Bird was. My cousins constantly tell me how great Michael Jordan was.

NOW, I have a superstar to tell my kids about.

I’ve seen him be great. I’ve seen him struggle. I’ve seen him make mistakes. I’ve seen him grow up.

And I grew up with him.

LeBron is MY generation’s superstar.

First it was “Can he be successful in the NBA?”

Then it was “Can he win the MVP?”

Then it was “Can he win a title?”

Now…

I’m sure the pressure will turn to “Can he win 6 Championships?”

I’m sure it won’t be easy.

And I dont think LeBron would want it to be easy.

But up to this point LeBron has met all expectations. I’m not betting against him.

Congrats LeBron.

It’s been a pleasure for us to watch you grow up on and off the floor. You gave our generation a true superstar that we can be proud of.

We cant wait to WITNESS more greatness.

This is the type of thing people will say about LeBron when he's gone, but they're afraid or reluctant to say now and go against public opinion. He is a true living legend. We are lucky to have him as a part of our generation. The man is just over 4 years older than me, and I can remember watching a high school game of his on ESPN. I remember watching his first NBA game against the Kings. I've grown up with him too.
