then it probably means the port where you plug them in is faulty. Constantly plugging them in & out wears it out

A computer doesn't need to recognize headphones for your sound card to send sound to them.
Do mean a headset?

I've never seen a PC "recognize"a set of headphones that wasn't a headset.
If you plug them in and your not getting sound try another set of headphones in the same jack.
If there's still no sound you may want to try updating your sound cards drivers.

Both my pairs of headphones do not work, and i do believe the sound card hasnt been updated in a while. I will update them and get back to you

My computer at work recognizes it. It's weird, I agree, but some do.

OK i cant figure out how to update my sound card drivers.
Press Windows key + R.
Then type dxdiag", press enter.
Under the sound tab it should list your PCs sound hardware.
Then Google: (hardware name) + drivers.

Honestly, it sounds like the port is just blown. Easiest solution is probably this:

...or.
This method has Windows search for driver updates automatically.
But it often turns up dated drivers or nothing at all.

Click start.
Right click My Computer
Select properties.
Click device manager.
Expand sound, video, and game controllers.
Find your sound card, right click, select update driver.

i've had a similar issue before only it was with my ipod. it could be something more serious but sometimes it's just dust buildup in the headphone jack.

try taking a qtip (you may have to remove some of the cotton) and swabbing the inside to see if anything comes out.
