Aside from the representation of sex, I have little clue why this show is popular. It could be that most hip TV critics also live in Brooklyn, and that most of these people happen to be white twenty/thirty somethings. Thus, it just becomes one very insular thing. Same thing with 'Portlandia', which is just as lazy with its representations and just as perfect for the extensive online 'think pieces' about TV we have now. I also simply don't think she's a very good writer. I watched the premiere, and I felt a lot of the writing was spoon fed and, like I said, perfect for critical pieces on the AV Club. (I did think the scene on the couch with a boyfriend was strong though, as well as the opening. I thought the 'I could be a drug dealer' shaming she did on her parents is so true to people who try to pass off their mediocrity by saying they could be much worse hahah). But, I generally feel that there are so many more talented women who deserve a shot over Lena Dunham! I bet this all stems from jealously, though. Even the New Yorker (so high-brow) wrote a long ass, muddled defense of 'Girls' and they ended it with 'the critics are just jealous'. ![]() |

It's a problem that whenever I read major TV critics takes on this highly specific and economically/racially/socially insular show, almost every critic says 'I feel like this show was made just for me.'

I didn't read a single review and I liked it. Yes I'm a white 20 something who's grown up with parents money, but I'm guessing that is most of the HBO audience anyway. So what's the problem? And Portlandia is mocking a liberal bubble, not being written to be written about by bloggers. It sounds like you read too many reviews. |

I don't really understand the complaint. Because they've been writing about this show for four months. It's been on for a week. When you dedicated 10 pages on the front cover of New York Magazine to gush about it, people pay attention. Ditto for The New Yorker. I've never seen a show salivated over this much. Even fans of The Wire are like, 'take it easy'. |

I don't really understand the complaint. Also, that's fine, but then don't advertise the show as being the voice of a generation for all twenty somethings. IF it's a niche show, call it that. Don't act like this is The Great American TV Show. If that little demographic of twenty somethings is representative of every twenty something, shoot me in the face and call it a day. |

Don't act like this is The Great American TV Show. If that little demographic of twenty somethings is representative of every twenty something, shoot me in the face and call it a day.Well from what I saw in one episode... It did seem pretty emblematic of a lot of circumstances kids from the entitled social class find themselves in. Obviously the show is the extreme case, but my senior year of high school I definitely had the "At least I'm not a drug dealer" ideology, or at best, merely used it as a tool of argument. And I've had the "Being cut off" talk before as well, which is an awful experience in which you realize that your logic has turned adult too quickly, leaving your ego behind. I've done internships and volunteer work and tried to justify it as me doing grown-up things. I've done all these things and related to the show, yet I'm not a 20something year old liberal girl from Brooklyn who steals from cleaning women. I'm from an upper-class, conservative, cowboy-dreaming, town in Texas. So if the show can span that distance of relatability I wouldn't say it's just a niche show. But yeah I didn't read any of those opinion pieces in New York Magazine or The New Yorker. So you are right, it probably has been over-lauded. ...I really didn't find it incredibly hilarious or anything so it's weird I find myself defending it. |

Because they've been writing about this show for four months. It's been on for a week. But this too. "Insert some sort of thinly veiled rant about how your parents didn't pay for your education, let alone your rent for two years after college, and look at you now. You're not working at McDonald's (but you would if you had to) or having unprotected anal sex with a self-indulgent jerk (who, by the way, has bad hair). No, not you. You are a hard-working, self-made blogger. And this show does not accurately depict the lives of hard-working, self-made bloggers. And for some reason, that's not okay." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/madeleine-crum/girls-hbo_b_1443026.html |

How so? I find it pretty interesting. The moderation there is embarrassing. At least Kanyelive lets you have a difference in opinion. But yea, some of the stories are alright. |

I just don't get why everyone is taking this so seriously. Both sides of the argument seem to be calling for this whole "voice of a generation" thing that the show doesn't seem to try to represent at all from my point of view. I just think it is a funny show. Damn.

I've read through the various critiques of the show and ultimately I could care less whether the main characters were white, black, green, or purple. They are portraying a segment of society that actually exists. The privileged post college twenty something. I'm a black male who grew up in an upper class environment. I know what it is like to live off your parents in the years after college, desperately hanging on to the hope that they will continue to fund the lifestyle that you have grown accustomed to. When you have to grow up and that rug gets pulled out from under you, **** GETS REAL! Hopefully they'll delve into that aspect of the show more throughout the season, but that is definitely why it's intriguing to me.

I liked the first episode. I found it interesting, if not particularly funny. I want to see how it develops. While its completely plausible that their group of friends only consists of white people, I still would've liked to see some more people of color represented. But I also don't want a show like this to fall into tokenism. While it would've been great to have some POC, it's not absolutely necessary for me to enjoy the show. I can see how the constant gushing about this show by the critics could turn people off. After a while, I just had to tune it out in order to form my own opinion free of their influence. I can see how television critics could relate to it so much, but I still think their coverage of the show has been over the top. I also think the backlash has been over the top. |

And it's not even about the show itself. Just people complaining about white people problems, yet they probably got wet over Entourage and How to Make it in America. People love to complain, and this show is the perfect target. I actually like 'Girls', so all the haters can fall back. She reminds me of Definitely. I can see the resemblance. |
