Damn, I can't believe how much people aren't anticipating this movie. I guess the marketing is just bad. I had to read A Princess of Mars in one of my history courses (I explored futurism in Burroughs' novel) and I've been really anticipating this movie. It's going to be really hard to convince people this isn't a Star Wars or Avatar ripoff because both Star Wars and Avatar owe so much to Burroughs novel. As I was reading the novel, it was hard not to be reminded of the colosseum in Episode 2; that scene in Episode 2 almost feels like a direct adaptation of Burroughs work right down to how much the geonosians looks like the green martians Burroughs describes. Furthermore, as John Carter is accepted by the green martians and trained in their ways, its hard not to be reminded of Avatar. John Carter learns to control the creatures of Barsoom almost exactly like how Jake Sully learns to control the creatures of Pandora. What makes matters worse is that although Burroughs' novels are vital works of science-fiction literature, I doubt the average film-goer today knows the history behind them. The novels are a century old, so they're not exactly in the cultural mainstream right now. It is kind of like how Tarzan is an extremely well-known character, yet Burroughs novels are probably less well recognized than the character himself. People are probably more familiar with Disney's rendition of Tarzan than with Burroughs' source material. Nevertheless, I am eagerly anticipating this film. I'm not sure I'll be able to catch it on opening day, but I'm hoping to see it in Imax (70mm) soon! |

This film will bomb like a ****. The special effects remind me of 'Green Lantern' from last year, and that's not a good sign. |
