I haven't read that but I've read other stuff by the author, I'm sure it's great.

Some contemporary novels I adore are City of Thieves, The Virgin Suicides and The Financial Lives of the Poets.

what are they about?

City of Thieves

Plot: Two young men must bring an army colonel a dozen eggs during Siege of Leningrad (famine like a mufugga). Crazy things happen. It is a coming of age tale, historical and humorous.

About: Coming of age, friendship.

Fav quote: “The loneliest sound in the world is other people making love.”

The Virgin Suicides
Plot: Teens commit suicide in sacred Suburbia.

About: without spoiling the ending, which ends on a poignant note (it's not a gotcha ending by any means) I'd say the theme is innocence.

Fav quote: “The seeds of death get lost in the mess that God made us.”

The Financial Lives of the Poets

Plot: Guy sells weed to help family during recession (think Breaking Bad, kind of)

About: Middle ageness, mid life crisis, America.

Fav quote: I don't know, but this novel is pretty humorous, the other two have plenty of dry dark humor but this is laugh out loud funny.

So I just finished The Sun Also Rises. Was not my taste. I really did not like Hemmingway's style and found the book awfully boring.

While his style is not my favorite either, I certainly appreciated the novel and enjoyed the quaint descriptions, the bull fighting analogy, and the prevailing sense of drunkenness. Actually **** now that I remember it, that book was sad as ****. You realize she's not with him in the end because he can't satisfy her sexually? His wound from the war prevents him from really having sex. Basically the theme was that sex is everything and without it you have nothing. Depressing **** with them in the back of the taxi at the end reflecting on how they would have made a great couple.

yeah I realized that. Tbh throughout the whole story, I just thought it was about drowning your sorrows with alcohol. Cohn was a punk tho, lol.

That was my first Hemmingway novel. Are they all like that?

Pretty much, they all use a similar prose style - short, sparse, poetic. I've read For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Old Man and The Sea, and some of his short stories. The Old Man and The Sea is a very good short poetic book about a man fishing. Tbh, I appreciate Hemingway but I tend to prefer very contemporary novels.

Try 'The Killers'. Hemingway was best as a short story writer.

Yeah, I can see why people like him but I guess it's something you have to either be pre-exposed to or just let it grow on you and look at it from the perspective of what it is.

Will look into it! Thank you.

Has anyone read The Alchemist?

Right now I'm reading "The End of Normal" by Stephanie Madoff Mack, the widow of Mark Madoff, son of the infamous Bernie Madoff who committed the largest financial crime in history. The book is a very poignant look at the public pressure Stephanie and Mark were forced to endure after Mark's father, Bernie, confessed to his crimes. But the book also captures how information, paparazzi, media, and perhaps modern existence conflict with preserving a fleeting American dream. I really enjoyed her writing too and would recommend this to anyone looking for a good modern read. The case of Bernie Madoff has always fascinated me, how a family living a life of riches was nothing but a mirage and how it all ended so abruptly.

A Visit From The Goon Squad

Super Sad True Love Story

Empire Of Illusion

Stories I Only Tell My Friends

Story Of My Life

I've heard all great things about each. Ask me if you're interested in any of them.
